    Sick chicken - Egg Bound?

One of our Rhode Island red's is not feeling well. She walks crouched down and stops every few steps. Will eat when given treats. I think I feel an egg but not sure Her butt was very dirty, so we did a warm bath and cleaned her. When we hold her or even when she is in the water, she will...

Science Fair question about eggs going bad

I sure this has been asked before but here goes. My daughter, 11, is doing a science experiment about how long freshly laid eggs can sit on the kitchen counter before going bad. We are comparing unwashed and washed. The project is due at the end of January. She collected eggs the last week...

with storm coming, let hens out?

Hi Everyone! It's 9:30pm here in Central PA. We got the brunt of the storm around 6:00. I opened my coop this morning (8am) before the wind started up ( the girls stay in a fenced yard). At 4pm, DH went to lock the coop up - really windy and lots of rain - and the girls were all in the...

Thank you. My outside feeder and waterer are always filled. Don't usually keep these inside except on really cold windy days.

    Can chicks overeat?

I always have always had food available for my chickens - 4 black jerseys. I work in an elementary school - kindergarten - where we incubate eggs ( think from 4H). This year we hatched a version of Rhode Island Reds. Not sure which type - these are from a new supplier and they mainly raise...

Yay!!! No more stinky brooder on my screened porch!

Congrats. Our 5 week old chicks are also in the coop as of today. I am happy to get the brooder out of my kitchen! Not to sure how the big girls are feeling. The little ones were chirping very loud when I went out to close the coop!

    Still Molting!

Wish I had some suggestions for you. My 4 hens are less than 1 year old and we have not seen eggs since Sept/Oct. I see feathers in the coop every day but no bare patches. They don't come out of the coop much in this colder weather. We have a light on for 12 hours but not helping...

This is our first fall/winter. We were getting 3-4 eggs every day from 4 chickens. For the last week, 2 or 3 eggs. Yesterday (Sunday) - 0 eggs. Today -2. Hopefully it's the change in daylight hours and the snow last weekend. My girls want out of the run but with school in session ( I...

    Chickens not eating Layer food

Can someone help? My girls (4 black jerseys) are about 8-9 months old. We had been getting 3 or 4 eggs a day. They had been eating their pellet food and when free ranging going after the neighbors bird feeder dropping (what ever was laying on the ground, mainly sunflower seeds). To keep...
