Hi KaleIAm - Chips is doing so much better! We did get the new medicine for fungal infection, but we've given her a couple days off and she's breathing great and seems wonderful...not sure if we should do the new meds or not. I think we will - as a just in case thing - but it's so great to see...
I called the vet today and asked about a medication for a fungal infection - she ordered one and we will pick it up next week. Praying this one helps...
We finish our second two-week round of antibiotics tomorrow. Chips is a bit better, but still not great. She will have hours where she is breathing normally and then back to opening her mouth and shaking her head. I'll call the vet today to find out if she wants us to do another 2 weeks or not...
One of our almost 5 month old girls just laid her first egg last night! We got hit hard this week with over a foot of snow and below freezing temps all week so I was shocked to see an egg in the coop this morning! We will have to toss it since it could be from Chips who has been on antibiotics...
We picked up a new female so that if Chips doesn't make it, Fish will have a new "sister". We had her in the pen in a large tub - she saw the girls and jumped/flew out and ran up the hill and jumped in the pool! She was so excited - not sure she has ever been in a pool before...Fish and Chips...
going to look up a heated hose now!
I've been thinking about a heater for the "pool" - but I would want one that sinks so they can still swim around and not bump it, but I'd need to be sure it wouldn't burn them if they touched it or melt the plastic...
Just went out to look at Chips - she does not stretch her neck out at all. She just opens her mouth and breathes.
Our girls are pretty picky eaters - we gave them a live worm one day and they looked disgusted - watched it and walked away. They like the worms dried - love their mealworms at...
@Royaly Ducked - I'm sorry that you may need to re-home some of your ducks...We are looking to add a female since one of ours is sick and we should have started with three instead of just two...ugh, not many people willing to sell a single female.
And, I've never noticed either of our girls...
I'll ask her Monday about Gapeworm - never heard of that! Thank you all for the thoughts and advice.
The vet gave us two more weeks of medications:
Doxycycline - 50 mg 2xday
Amoxicillin Trihydrate and Clavulanate Potassium Tabs - 2 x125 mg/ 2xday
Her quack has improved - she quacks loudly...
I'm going to call the vet today. We are done with the medication and she is still breathing through her mouth. I am afraid that it is probably fungal. I can't spend more money on vet bills. If the vet thinks another round of antibiotic might help we'll purchase that again, but otherwise I'm not...
Thanks. She was doing much better Sunday - quacking and breathing through her nostrils...then Sunday night back to open mouth breathing. Couldn't get meds in her Monday evening or today. She pretty much hates me now.
My husband and daughter went to the mountains for a few days so now that she...
She's the same - having trouble giving her the medications from the vet. I'll be happy when it warms back up here tomorrow. They are living in the coop for now since it's cold outside.
We need to give Chips three pills every 12 hours. Last night I cut the larger ones in half and stuffed them into peas...I thought it went OK. This morning, Chips spit out at least 3 of the 4 1/2's of antibiotic, I assume I got the other in her since I didn't see it come out.
Does anyone know a...
