    Hen count down to 2

What's the minimum for health and happiness? For various reasons, I'm down to 2 hens, one about 1 3/4 years old (slowed down layer), the other a bit younger (laying well). I could just keep the two until next spring; or add one or two more pullets now; or give these girls away, and start fresh...

    Switching feed with picky eaters

Thanks, all. Followed the advice of no-choice-but-to-eat-it or go hungry, and after about 36 hours, they decided this gourmet chow was far better than nothing, after all. 36 hours of loud complaints every time I went near them, of course...

    Switching feed with picky eaters

Thanks, Michael. How long did you wait before you gave up on the one feed and went to another?

    Switching feed with picky eaters

Help! I've had my four young laying hens about 3 months, and just switched from regular laying crumbles to organic crumbles -- same size, different company and product. Unfortunately, they won't touch the stuff. I know I should blend the old with the new feed, but I am completely out of the...

    Can this bantam/biggie intro work?

I plan on starting a new small backyard flock tomorrow with three just-started laying pullets, all full-size Easter Eggers, from a local breeder. Two days later, I'd like to introduce two bantam Ameraucanas, about 5 - 6 months old, from a different backyard hobbyist. Could this work? Can the...

    Run floor question

Has anyone used bark mulch, like playground bark, or similar?

    Silkies plus others?

Thank you all, this is helpful. This mix of breeds and sizes, did you start with all of them at the same time, or introduce them into existing groups? It sounds like size, alone, though, and funny feathers, won't cause social problems. I just may give it a try!

    Silkies plus others?

I've never had Silkies or bantams of any kind -- I'm used to the big, heavy Reds, Rocks, etc. But now I'm starting a new, small urban-backyard flock, and wondering whether Silkies or bantams can happily share space with larger birds, like Easter Eggers or similar moderate-large hens. Does all...

    Space requirements

Do square footage calculations per bird refer to total floor area -- up and down in a 2-story coop? Does covered run count? I'm in the process of starting a small -- 3 - 4 hens -- backyard flock of smaller, though not bantam, breeds. In the past, (and in a completely different climate), I had a...
