    Limping hen

It’s definitely sad, but I’m not sure there was much I could do. At least she was warm snd safe when she passed last night.

    Limping hen

I buried her today already. I don’t think I could cut her open. I’m still new to chickens and this was our first death so it’s been hard. My kids were sad too. I’m the caretaker though so I felt bad like I had failed her. But I’m not a vet and maybe it was just her time.

    Limping hen

Our hen died overnight. Not sure what happened. Brought her inside in a crate with bedding, food, and water. This morning I went to check on her snd she was dead. She was our first hen to die on us since we got them. Kind of bummed out today. Not sure what else I could have done.

    Limping hen

We’ve had our chickens for about 9 months now with only a couple minor incidents/injuries. This morning they were all fine. This afternoon I opened the coop door and one hen was sitting down on the coop floor by herself. Normally she is very active and does not like to be held. But I was...

Sick chicken - what to give her?

She seems to be doing a little better today. She seems more alert. I gave her some grapes, blueberries, and some bread and she scarfed all that up. Tried giving her some sunflower seeds but wasn’t interested in that at all. Not sure how much she is drinking, but I have water in her cage...

Sick chicken - what to give her?

No new birds added, water is clean and contained, feed is changed, bedding is clean in the coop, etc. Not sure where she got it from. We’ll call a vet tomorrow and see what we can do. I’ve found all the good antibiotics are only available with a prescription.

Sick chicken - what to give her?

We’ve had chickens for about 6 months now, this is the first time one has gotten sick. Our one hen is sneezing and coughing, has difficulty breathing, making gurgling noises, etc. Her eyes are clear, she still moves around, still eats and drinks a little, but at time stands around and nods off...

How long for chickens to use OverEZ waterer with nipples?

Sorry I should have mentioned they are grown hens, I was just transitioning them from an open waterer to this one. I spent some time out there pecking at the waterer with my finger and showing them how it works. I didn’t have any luck, but my wife did later on. Most of them seem to get it...

How long for chickens to use OverEZ waterer with nipples?

I recently purchased an OverEZ waterer with nipples as I got tired of dealing with dirty water, other birds drinking the water, spillage, etc. (generic pic attached) I was a little concerned as it doesn't look that easy for the chickens to drink from, nor figure out if they're used to a...

Keeping birds out of coop and run

Well I switched to a new feeder, removed everything from the coop, and shut the door to the coop in the afternoon after the hens laid their eggs for the past few days. The last couple days I haven’t seen any birds in the run other than a few random sparrows. Before there were 30-40 of these...

Keeping birds out of coop and run

Thanks everyone! I did some more research today and came up with a plan. Going to get some pvc pipe and bird netting to make a roof enclosure over the run. Going to use bird netting on the sides to as they can fit through the chain link fencing. Shouldn’t be too hard to do and won’t be too...

Keeping birds out of coop and run

We recently got chickens back in the spring and set up a nice coop inside two large dog kennels. We haven't had any issues with hawks or predators as I lock the chickens up at night in the coop. I had no issues until the last month or so when I noticed tons of birds (appear to be starlings)...

    Hardware cloth over window

Oh I see, so they jacked their prices up recently then. Thats the plan, get the other window done later this week. I may add some vents later this summer too to the man door and above the coop door. I just used a pair of snips to cut the hardware cloth but an angle grinder would be much...

    Hardware cloth over window

That’s good to hear! I hope ours are okay as well.

    Hardware cloth over window

That hardware cloth isn’t the easiest stuff to work with! Never used it before. I measured everything a few times and it turned out pretty good. I may add some ventson the sides as most people seem to agree the coop is lacking in ventilation.
