Yep, they fit right through. I was worried about the cage being too small too. It was fine for Momma when sitting on eggs, but now she wants to show off and EAT lots of food. I think the showing off was a bad idea on her part. The other chickens just thought it was a new fun moving piece of food...
I was so excited, these were my first chicks hatched by one of my own. She sat on 4 eggs for 20 days and 3 hatched on July 5. The black one was my favorite, very hyper right from the beginning. Then, on Wed I went out and the bright yellow one was smashed (they are in the same coop as the rest...
I think I have a major case of picking. The picture attached is my rooster, but about half the hens look pecked too. I have tried the tar stuff the coop sells, but by the next morning, that is all gone, and the picking continues. Any ideas?
If I didn't do anything to screw it up: I think my four eggs will hatch on 7/6 (21 days, right?).
One of my Black Stars has sat on them consistantly except for a few hours the day after I moved her nest to a more secluded area. But, following another post, I will have to agree that you almost...
Okay. I think this weekend will be spent re-arranging the coop to add a broody area!
Thank you all for your input. I am really grateful for all the good advice!
Oh, does anyone know if I should add extra nutrient to her water, or will she be fine without it?
Thanks again!

I didn't think about her leaving the ones that haven't hatched yet to tend the ones that have. I have a feeling that it is going to be a loooonngg day for me when/if the eggs start hatching (I'm trying not to get my hopes up to high for my first try!)
Do you pen the momma up to keep...
Thanks!
I am going to try to leave her in there then. The others seem to be leaving her alone and I have plenty of other boxes for them to lay in. I will just make her get up about twice a day to eat and drink.
I have never seen the YouTube videos of the baby chick tossing, and it kind of...
I have my first Broody Hen (a Black Star). She is sitting in a regular nest box in the middle of the group of boxes. There are nine boxes, so the one she is in is about 3 feet off of the floor.
She has 5 eggs under her.
Everything I've read says that I need to move her out of the regular...
I can just picture you with your legs sticking out!! That's great! I guess I'm going to have to put some of the DH's golf balls out in the boxes to see if that will help!
So, I just started getting eggs at the beginning of the month, but I hadn't found any in about a week and was starting to wonder... Last night I started really hunting around the coop, and low and behold, in a corner that I didn't think a chicken could even fit in, 9 eggs!! Sneaky little...
I'm sorry. We didn't lose any chickens here, but I didn't have any little ones trying to hatch right now. I do feel your pain though. We haven't had electricity since Tuesday 1/27 @ 9:00am and it is still not on (yes, I am taking advantage of the electricity at work, ). Same ice storm that...
