2010 Peeps -
These are our first 4 peeps, obtained at 2 weeks of age from a local feed store. They were labeled "Ameraucana Pullets" and were very friendly and feisty. We brought them home April 19, 2010. My son...
Me and My Crazy Ideas...
welcome to my page and what will probably become known (unofficially) as Desert Moon Farm. i wanted "standing stone farm" but apparently someone beat me to it. in case you're thinking "oh, desert moon, what a cliche" i offer this (a view from my backyard) in response...
My Crazy Chicken Idea
it all started with whining about wanting chickens for long enough that people started paying attention. that only took about 5 years. then some research on breeds, what would be fun to raise, since we only want eggs and preferably colored ones. it's really all about fun...
Yes we have 2 2 inch holes in the incubator to add extra air to the system, and behind the fan we also have several 1/4 inch holes so the fan can suck in extra air into it all the time. I've found out if we left larger holes in the incubator that the humidity drops low, so we put in 2 2 inch...
We recently purchased eggs to hatch since it was to cold to get one day old chicks, So we decided to see if we can hatch a few chicks for spring.
Well all the eggs we got 90% of them were fertile and good, "out of 80+ eggs" we would candle them ever 7 days and on the 18th day for the final...
two dogs here - both rescues and therefore mutts (rez dogs most likely). one looks like a golden retriever only red with very long legs, except that she has a curly tail (curly like husky curly, we can't figure that out). she loves chicks when they are in the house and thinks everything we bring...
my blue chick - the only one in the box! - was a beautiful pewter gray as a fuzzy butt. my splashes were pale yellow with barely visible gray fluff, and when they started to feather they looked like they were going to be just plain white for the longest time!
i ordered the "rainbow layers" mix from mcmurray, and got ee's, andalusians, white leghorns, new hampshire reds, and dark cornish, all pullets (including the packing peanuts, i was SO HAPPY about that!) the only roo was our "free rare breed" and he turned out to be a gold-laced wyandotte, which...
our gold laced came from the feed store - they look great to me.
i don't care about show quality, however i HONESTLY can't tell a difference between mine and those which have been expensively and carefully bred and shown on this thread as "ideal examples". the feed store guy said his order came...
i think she's beautiful!
she looks just like ours, who is also from mcmurray, who my son coincidentally named eragon even before we knew what she would look like - if you don't understand, eragon is the boy with a blue dragon so we thought it turned out pretty appropriate!
with ee's the grey leg trait can be bred out if the original araucana was quite a few generations back. just like some of them can have a different comb, or lose the muffs and beard. the more generations back the actual planned cross was compared to the most recent breeding mix, or the more...
yes, any time chickens get upset they can lay strange eggs. there is a variety of strange things that can happen to the egg, shell-less looks like what you have and she should be over it by the next time. give her a bit of extra calcium maybe.
looks a bit like my dark cornish but they have yellow legs and a flat comb, not single. coloring looks like it though. your bird has long legs and a thin body, i'd guess some type of game. is she bantam or standard? i don't know anything about bantys, had some maybe 15-20 years ago when we got a...
