I certainly hope you get this resolved. I lost one hen to illness a few months ago, and only after reading this thread, I realize it was probably caused by prolapse. When I removed her body from the coop, only then did I notice the egg hanging from her rear (strangely, I never saw it when she...

Excellent!!!
The same thing happened to one of our hens after a dog attacked the coop (before I had built the run). Unfortunately, mine didn't return to the coop that night and was picked off by something else.
Hey all,
I am a relatively new hen owner, entering the second winter with our Rhode Island Reds (or what's left of them...only 2 remain of 6). One of them somehow broke her leg (her thigh, I believe) either last year or early this year. For days, she couldn't move, but gradually, she moved...
I'm interested in your plight because the same's happening here. I have four hens (about 1 year old) and no roosters. One hen started brooding last week. I feel bad that she's in there all day with the afternoon temperature in the 90's and dew point around 70 (i.e. typical NJ summer weather)...

I have learned that the chickens do indeed lay eggs in the winter. I was unclear at first whether production slowed or completely stopped. Our six Rhodys were pullets when we got them in August. Without any...

I don't know with absolute certainty. I recall seeing a web page (perhaps here) that listed NJ towns which have specific ordinances regarding chickens. Hillsborough was not among those listed. We have six hens only on 0.7 acre.
Hey Jersey gang! We're chicken noobies from Hillsborough, Somerset County. I know of at least two other owners in town, and I'm sure there are more, as there is a decent amount of room per-capita.
Howdy folks,
We received six juvenile Rhode Island Red hens in August from the local 4H fair. I bought a used coop locally, which seems to be working out nicely. Our aim is to simply have fun keeping the chickens and enjoy and share the eggs.
I'm considering putting some lighting in the coop...
Hey all, this is my first post on the forum here. We are first-time chicken owners, and recently received six juvenile RIR hens. I believe they are getting close to egg-laying age now. My question is: Without providing any artificial light, will the chickens lay any eggs over the winter...
