Got my eggs today! A day early- WOOHOO!
Thank you, Nancy! They were wrapped and cushioned beautifully- totally encased in bubble wrap with box inside of box.
Now onto incubation and............. babies!
I'll keep you posted on the hatch.

Hi Nancy ------ YAY!!
FIVE...
Thanks Minxfox and Autumnmfisher! I have experience with chicken eggs- but have never had a peafowl egg before. I have had dark shelled eggs (chickens) that were impossible to see into when candling - thinking nothing was there, then having a chick hatch. With this lone peafowl egg the "free...
Day 18 on incubated Peafowl egg- it is not moving inside and when I move the egg- the shadow seems to "free float"- is it a goner?. The egg developed strong veining and eye by day 9- then grew- but mostly as a dark shadow (I couldn't see much - only the shadow). The shadow has taken up about 1/3...
Vetaflame -----If your older flock is getting fed the laying mash somewhere the babies cannot get to it- it will probably be fine. I was just mentioning it to you because you said you gave the baby the laying mash. Have fun with your new flock members! Such cute little fluff butts!
Vetaflame-
Congrats on your baby!
When you are raising babies in the same coop and run with older laying hens you need to put the whole flock on starter mash or crumble, and keep a separate container of oyster shells for the older girls free choice- but out of reach of the babies.
Laying mash...
Thank you Minx- yes I candled it before I started incubating (because I didn't know how old the egg was- just to make sure the yolk was freemoving and not calcified). At day 7 I saw the beginning of what I thought were veins, and then at day 9- a large network of veins and also an eye. I'm now...
Oh, thank you Yoda! I'm on day 9 so it's probably too late to put chicken eggs in the bator, but when I get closer and it looks like it will hatch, I'll find a couple of day-old chix and put them in the brooder together. PHEW!! I was worried about blackhead, and also worried about having the...
Thanks New 2 pfowl. That may be a little too far for me - I'm in San Diego
I have another question about how you think the egg came to be in such a narrow deep hole- do they normally bury their eggs? It looked to me like it was a rabbit, gopher or snake hole.
Or does it need a companion? If so... what is the perfect breed of chicken or other poultry that would make a good companion? My grandkids and I found a wild peafowl egg inside a rabbit hole on a hike. They wanted to "save" it- there was no nest around and it was about 10" into a hole - so would...
Amywho-
No water. Put the dry ice directly in the bottom of the bin, then put a wire basket- (you could use anything- that allows the air to go through but keeps the dry ice separate from the bird) whatever fits in the bin- even a cooling rack would work- then I put a few handfuls of soft hay...
Sorry to hear that Tamster! Also- Welcome to BYC!!
My original post about this was in 2010 and in the last 4 years, my flock has grown from 6 chickens, to 20. Along the way, I had another bird I needed to put down- the method worked like a charm. Glad I could help.
I know what you mean about leghorns freaking out Richard. I had a small flock of white leghorns about 35 years ago and SWORE I would NEVER, EVER have them again! I hated the breed -they tried to commit mass-suicide every day by flying into the fence, or my head, or whatever else they perceived...
Aww... how darling- a little blue Fairie Egg!
My little brown one that I set in the incubator did not develop. Some people say fairie eggs don't have yolks- but mine did- it had a little yolk inside- it looked just like a regular egg, only tiny.
