I have roosts in my run and I would NOT want my chickens to jump down and land on an extremely hard (and possibly slippery) surface. You KNOW that they are going to scratch the dirt from the surface of the paver... Just my $.02.
I actually won't be able to move them upstairs, my set up is too big :( I've got a red, non-heat type bulb (but it does keep them at the right temp) on them with a dimmer swich, but I would have to dim it bit by bit each evening and hope they had enough sense (not likely - tee hee) to get under...
Does everyone using the MHP usually end up placing the chicks under it each night? My chicks are in the basement which has very small windows, so it's fairly dark most of the time. Is this my problem - not having the natural waning of daylight so they'll go under the MHP on their own? If I...
No, actually they were packed in thin sheet foam and then put in actual egg cartons. There was shredded foam around the cartons and also shredded paper in the shipping box. The box had a small dent on the corner, but I guess that's all it took to break the eggs. I told him that I would...
Thanks for the response. As it turned out, since I had the problem this a.m. I had to figure out what to do then and there. What I did was spritz with water so they wouldn't stick to anything. I ended up spritzing them a few times and decided to wash them gently. When I did wash them it...
I just received hatching eggs. Out of 12, 4 were broken. They were packed in such a way that the egg goo got all over the 8 good ones. My question is - can these be washed off and put under the broody? I don't want to hinder the egg shels, so it can't "breathe", but I can't put them under...
Oh, shoot, they're 2+ years old. I know that when they're starting to lay, that's one of the indicators - squatting. These girls may or may not be the mom of a chick that hatched in late August. I've never had hatching eggs before, so I don't know if squatting is an indicator when they're a...
Most of my hens have finally made it through their molt. Yesterday one of the hens squatted. Does that mean that she may start laying eggs in a bit? I think she may be one of the "mamas" that raised a chick that hatched from a shipped egg (long story). If so, she has been on hiatus since August...
I have 17 hens. I let them out in the a.m. to forage for the day. I usually toss them two cans (soup can size) of scratch in the morning as well. I then feed them fermented feed before they go to bed at night. Is this enough food for them or do I need to add another meal?
Cream Cheese? I have it left over for a "Girl's"Hen" Party Weekend and don't want to eat it myself, or throw it away if I don't have to...
Thanks for the help!
When I give my birds oyster shell, they eat it until all that is left is the shell dust. Will they eat the dust, or should I throw it out and put in fresh oyster shell?
Everyone always says how long their oyster shell lasts them. I have 14 hens and have gone through at least 6 pounds of...
I have two Golden Laced Wyandottes that seem to be going broody. They lay an egg every day or so, but I collect them. They stay on the nest anyway. They are on it when I close them in at night - usually about 8:30 or so, and are still on the nest in the morning - near as I can figure. As far as...
