I have 9wk old chicks that stopped using heat at 1 wk..by choice...
And sleep outside...again by choice...

I've put them in their coop (its just them in there)...they come back out...
I stopped...and allow them to do what they please...
Hasn't harmed them and it's pretty cold...
I free range my chickens, and don't let my pigs roam. I know for a fact, a chicken hopped their fence and got gobbled up...
I am missing 2...the one I know got eaten, and the one I am sure has gotten eaten, and the pigs have constant access to food and water....
It's an opportunity...and they...
I do agree, they are so so useful!!!
I do a lot of "from scratch" cooking/baking and I love having them readily on hand...
And while my kids may be getting sick of them...I am still waterglassing my extras bc I always worry abt the what ifs...🤷♀️🤷♀️
I like them, my husband loves them..and my kids have started to hate them 🤣🤣🤣
I couldn't eat eggs for years...like 7 yrs...
After I had my last baby, they started making me throw up, and feel sick...
Last yr, I carefully tried one of our chicken eggs, and have enjoyed a few eggs a wk...
It's worked super well for me...
I also line the bottom with a 4x4 sheet of cardboard...(one on each side)
So when I am done brooding..I just pick it up, fold it half...and funnel it into my compost...
Shop vac out the rest of the shavings from the box...
Clean it up. Sanitize it and use it...
I use 2 boxes joined together for an 8x4 brooder...and 2 heat boards as a cave
I put mine outside wk 2 or 3
