"His" comb is much pinker than the others and slightly larger. The barring on the neck is lighter and smaller rows like a roo will have. Even at this age, it's pretty obvious! I have Light Sussex, though, that are 3 1/2 months old and still can't tell on part of them. Some breeds are just...
I bought 8 barred rock pullets from our feed store that came from Ideal. They are about 4 weeks old now and one is obviously a cockerel. I think a 10% error rate is considered "normal" but still frustrating....
I've had two orders of McMurray chicks this year. First order shipped on Saturday and arrived on Monday. ALL the Sumatras were either DOA or died shortly thereafter and I lost several of other breeds in the first few days. Remaining chicks are doing fine now. Second order shipped on a Sunday...
I agree with the first two people. Had semi decent luck years ago with a LG but it was a total pain to keep constant temp and humidity. Bought a Genesis 1588 on the recommendation of a friend and LOVE it! Had a great hatch the first batch of eggs I set and it's not wavered at all tempwise...
They are on a standard medicated chick starter that I think is 18%. I would have separated them by now (usually only leave them about 4-5 days with the others) but I'm leaving town next week and trying to make chores as easy as possible for the hubby
Isn't it amazing?! They double in size daily it seems like!!
Probably best if you separate them after 5 days so you can take food away at night as recommended but I personally have a group that is about 2 weeks old that are still with my "regular" chicks. I plan on separating them in a week...
I had the same thing happen with McMurray chicks last week. Got about 60 in, lost ALL the Sumatras either in transit or shortly thereafter but others all seemed fine for about 2 days then lost 1-3 a day for another few days and all have been fine since. I've raised hundreds of chicks so not...
If "style" isn't important, this is a great little coop setup that would be adequate for a few chickens to start with: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/how-to-build-a-4-x-4-x-8-brood-pen. I made one and use it as a brooder for older chicks or small breed groups. I have also modified the...
Where did they come from? Shipped or local? I got a shipment in from McMurray on Monday and lost ALL the Sumatras either in shipment or shortly thereafter but thought all the other breeds were doing fine. I have lost at least one to three each day since, though, and feeling your frustration...
I'm in north Texas and have 3 types of onions, 3 types of potatoes, several types of asparagus, spinach, mesclun, radishes, herbs, peas, cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, collards, cabbage and rhubarb in the ground. Will be doing turnips and carrots this week, too. I love spring!!
I live in north Texas and have ordered chicks multiple times from several hatcheries and MUCH prefer McMurray over Ideal. Don't know how they do it but their shipments do get to me next day and Ideal's usually takes two days. I've had much healthier and better quality chicks universally from...
Most of what Welp sells comes from other sources, oftentimes other major hatcheries. That said, they give great customer service, good prices and I've ordered from them multiple times and always gotten very strong, healthy peeps. I have an order coming in the second week of February, in fact!
