Thanks! I think she was mildly moulting and then the chickens started picking her new feathers as they came in. I did try some blu kote and it looks better already today.
I've read a bunch of threads on BYC about feather picking, and will start implementing higher protein diet and giving the girls some free range time during the day, unfortunately it has to be supervised because we have a neighbor dog who likes to break into our yard. But any other suggestions...
Thanks everyone. I used to keep the baby chicks in a brooder cage in my basement, so now that area is technically contaminated too I'm not sure I have a "clean" place to quarantine baby chicks....this sucks. I did write to the farm and let them know that their information was incorrect and that...
Well, Della was euthanized today due to Marek's disease. She was very skinny, but you couldn't tell visually. She was so weak she couldn't stand, plus she did have a broken wing at the shoulder. The vet said that she could've gotten that by falling off of the perch last night because she was...
Yes, I'm planning to take her to the vet as soon as they open. I did not see her have a accident--she apparently went into the coop last night just fine...I thought they couldn't get Mereks after a certain age?? Everyone else seems healthy and fine. Thanks everyone!
I went to let my girls out this morning and one of them just kind of toppled out....it also looked like one of the other chickens was kind of attacking her. She is laying on her side, I haven't observed and standing, walking, or even laying right. She is laying over on one side with her wing...
Ripping part of the coop apart definitely sounds like a raccoon. I had to move my coop because of my stupid neighbor and it wasn't as strong as the original coop. Some raccoons ripped apart the cage in three places and killed all three of my chickens and left them in the yard. The ducks were...
Ok, I'm going to try to move both girls and their nests into the enclosed run area. Jemima has been pretty hissy with me, so this should be interesting....
Yes, the fertilized eggs are purebred Cayuga. The nests aren't secured, I put up some blockades for protection, but I'm not sure how to make them 100% secure from predators.....if I move the nests into an enclosed run area will the ducks freak out?
This is Jemima. She's a just over 9 months old, Cayuga and laying on her first nest...she is also laying on a couple unfertilized chicken eggs, so I will need to get those out when she's up. It looks like she has been pulling out her feathers to help make her nest. Is this possible or is she...
