Is it safe to use lime in the chicken coop?

After reading the posts on Stall Dry, I stopped by my local Feed and Farm store to see if they carried it and they did. I picked up two 40# bags at $10.99 each. That seemed pretty reasonable if it works as well as everyone says. I spred some on the wood floor, under the roosts, of my 8 X 12 coop...

    Selling eggs Questions <not selling...yet ;) >

I sell my eggs for $2.50 a dozen to friends, neighbors, co-workers and to customers that shop at the grocery store where I work. I advertise totally by word of mouth and if someone seems interested or has never had fresh eggs before I give them 1/2 a dozen for free to get them hooked. I usually...

    children and roosters

If your roo is starting to show aggressive behavior towards anyone and especially your small children I would re-home him. Mature roos can inflict serious damage, not to mention cause your little ones to become very afraid of all chickens. I had a roo who suddenly jumped on or attacked anyone...

    chicks right eye won't open

The chick is in a heated brooder with 4 other chicks and has been eating, drinking, and pooping just fine. It's eye is not swollen, red or draining. The lid just seems to be sealed shut.

    chicks right eye won't open

I bought a two day old silky banty from a feed and farm store last night. When I got it home I noticed that it's right eye was halfway closed. Today it's completely closed and won't open. I washed it gently to see if that would help, but it only seemed to hurt the baby. I'm wondering if I should...

Candling eggs under a broody and mean broodies

My GLCW would growl, scream and try to take my hand off when I would check her eggs, so I would just put on leather gloves and I was fine. I discovered that after the chicks hatched she was a wonderful and very protective mother to them, so I just figured she was that way from start to finish...

    Coop questions

I live in Rathdrum, Id. and our winters are colder than yours. My 8 X 12 coop is insulated and home to 23 layers and 2 roos, but they also have access to a very large fenced chicken yard. I have roof ventilation and two screened windows that I can open if needed for air in the winter to keep any...

    Fertile Rooster?

My Cuckoo Maran Roo was fertile at 5 months old. I let some of my broody hens hatch out some of his fertilized eggs and they were healthy strong chicks. He was the only roo I had at the time, so I knew he was the only one who could have gotten the job done!

    *Test egg lives!!!*

Hey, I work at Safeway in Idaho and have never heard of our store selling fertile eggs. How did you get ahold of one? What kind of egg is it? Organic? Brown?

The perfect mix of chicks. Which Roo?

I had a cuckoo maran roo who turned mean towards both me and my DH. I had to carry a broom whenever I entered the coop or yard. I was willing to let him get away with that until a week before Thanksgiving when he shredded the back of one on my hens and left her for dead, then attacked my DH when...

    New moms with new babies!

I bought my GL Cochin from Ideal as a new chick in early March and what a broody hen she became! She would allow other hens to lay in the box with her and then would immediately steal their eggs and cover them. I found 14 eggs under her one day! I allowed her to brood three. She was also an...

    New moms with new babies!

Here is a pic of my 5 month old frizzle and 5 month old golden laced cochin with their new babies. The frizzle hatched out a buff rock/cuckoo maran mix. The gl cochin hatched out 2 cuckoo marans and 1 ameraucana/cuckoo mix.

A 7 month old Broody Buff Orphington?

I had a 5 month old frizzle and 2 golden laced cochins go broody and they refused to leave their nesting boxes, so I let them hatch out some babies and they were wonderful attentive mamas. I put the mamas back in with the rest of the grown-ups, after a week, and put the babies in the brooder...
