I've looked at her bottom....way below the vent....and it looks raw and irritated.....feathers broken like she's trying to get them out. She was standing in the pond yesterday, as if the water was cooling her off. NONE of the hens have ever gone in the water. She's eating and drinking and...
Interesting that you mention the feed. I have just switched to a custom blend, but to be honest with you, I got the chicks from the same supplier, and the rest of the bunch are healthy and thriving. They've been on this blend for weeks. Sheesh!.......I was adding some powdered calcium to her...
Thank-you all so very much for the helpful suggestions. She is still active and lively. She's trying so hard to stand. One leg being weak and useless, but she can move it still. The other she seems to be able to use to flop, around in her basket. When she does try to move, she gets her...
I have been following your post and will continue to do so to see what the verdict is on your hens. I just wanted to comment on 2 things. If the diatomaceous earth is codex food grade, you should have no concerns. It is completely safe (for human consumption!) and will help control parasites...
Hey there! One of my 2yo. layers just dropped one night, back in April. Found her the next morning on the floor of the coop and she didn't appear to be distressed or ill. Poor 'ole girl. Thing is.......her sisters are perfectly healthy and continue to pump out eggs. You really don't know...
Well, I'm just frantic researching everything and every thread and post on splay leg or what others have done for chicks who can't stand up. I have sprinkled some oyster shell in her mash (suspecting a calcium deficiency) and am toying with the idea of adding ACV to her water (her vent seems...
Thanks Chickerdoodle- Her sisters are doing fine. All 8 are healthy and curious and growing. I will follow up on the questionnaire you refered me to. I've also called my feed supplier. He's been breeding poultry for over 30 years and also supplies me with a premium mash for my big girls. I...
Oh Geez......my heart goes to you and your husband. I read your previous post before you went out of town. I don't know anything about what's going on with your girls, as I'm new to raising hens and learning things by trial and error. Just wanted to offer my sympathy. It appears you had the...
I've got her inside now in a laundry basket. Her appetite is healthy, and she drinks her water well. So why can't she walk/run around? Her legs look good to me-and she can move them both at the body when I pick her up, but she just sits when I put her down. She's venting fine too. Any...
I HIGHLY recommend using diatomaceous earth for treating ALL sorts of worms, parasites, bacteria, fleas, lice, mites flys etc. and it's all-natural and safe. Great for your pets and YOURSELF too! I use it for my hens, dogs, cats, turkey, and take it myself daily.
I've followed the links suggested, not finding much help. I will take pics and post them if I can figure that out. I'm not savvy on how to do pics on this site, but I will try! Okay, have my image uploaded, don't know how to apply it to my message. This is hard!!
Thank-you all for your replies. His leg has healed in a mangled fashion. Toes are twisted and the bend is bulbous (No actual broken bones, but the leg is rendered useless nonetheless). If I could figure out a way to splint his leg, I would. Any suggestions on how to piece one together? :
I have a 6 mth old poult....he's a lone survivor of three we started with. He's sick, not to mention one of his legs is mangled from being broken. He is nearly immobile. I have him isolated in his own pen. I'm feeding him a diet of organic corn, oats, yogurt and scrambled eggs with...
