    Chickens Dying (?) Help!

A while ago we brought back a rooster that had breathing issues - raspy breathing, gurgling and he had an abscess beneath his eye, I believe. After that we've had a lot of chickens getting sick and passing away, but I have no idea what he could have had. He passed away only three days after we...

    Chickens Dying (?) Help!

Yesterday we had a snake attack on our flock. We believe it was a rat snake, and it was about five feet long. I found it curled up in one of our nesting boxes and there were four dead chickens, all of which had dark blue-purple combs. They had no puncture wounds. We got rid of the snake and I...

    9-day old Chick Coccidiosis (?)

I am seeking help for a 9-day old mixed breed chick that I hatched out of the incubator only a week and a few days ago. She's the same weight and size as the other chick I hatched with her, but she seems to have a lack in activity. She stands with her head low and her wings low, and doesn't move...

Review by '' on item 'Rhode Island Red'

I've had Rhode Island Reds all my life, since 7 years ago. While they're a good, hardy egg-laying breed and can be quite tame when you handle them a lot, they can be quite aggressive to new additions to the flock and stick to a very intense pecking order. When Roosters are not handled properly...

    I'm Sarah!

    (1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I got my first batch of four chickens approximately 7 years ago, in 2010. (2) How many chickens do you have right now? As of right now we have 47 chickens! (3) What breeds do you have? I have quite a few; most of them are Rhode...

    Hatch Day Questions!

One of the babies hatched yesterday and we now have him in the brooder! He's very lively and is trying to learn how to walk now. As for the other one, he/she has finally pipped, and we're waiting for it to hatch! I appreciate all of you helping out and answering my questions. I've always...

    Possibly diseased flock?

Unfortunately, we lost about 14 chickens last year because of Coccidiosis. I think one of the big mistakes we made was putting smaller chickens (about 3 months old) in with the big chickens. Not only did the disease probably affect them because they were babies still, but the older chickens...

    Hatch Day Questions!

Sorry, meant 99! It was originally on 122, which I knew was WAYYY too high for the babies. I took it down a couple days ago and they seem to be doing fine. I haven't done the float test since a couple days ago.

    Hatch Day Questions!

Today's day 21 - Hatch day! So far we've got 1 out of 2 babies hatched. The first one is definitely a Rhode Island Red, but the second one has the potential of being Rhode Island Red mixed with either a Cornish Cross, Black Sex Link, or Red Sex Link. He's doing pretty well, but I have a few...

    Possibly diseased flock?

We have never had this problem last year, and it only just started early this spring when we were first hatching our first chicks of the year. They all seemed to do fine each time we raised them for the first week, but ended up hunched over with ruffled feathers, and they could not move very...

Do Rhode Island Reds ever go broody?

Rhode Island Reds have the potential to become broody just as any other chicken does! I myself have a flock of Red Sex Links and Rhode Island Reds, most of them being RIR's. I've had one hen for almost a year now, and she's not very old and is a broody. Her mother was a RSL and hatched her out...

    Cockerel or pullet?

I believe it is a pullet as well, but you may want to keep an eye on it. It's quite hard to tell, in my opinion.

What breed and gender are these chicks?

Well, the Rhode Island Red and the Sussex were the only two that could've done it- the sussex was the only one laying eggs while the rooster was over at my neighbor's house. It would explain the coloring of the first chicken (Lucifer), he's White, Cream-colored, Black, and Brown.
