    Hands on hatching and help

thank you Amy that helps a lot and explains some things that happened as to why some had too much moisture and why the others dried out. We candled a few times just to see if there was movement. Wasn't aware of the air sack stuff. The two that lost too much were the ones we ordered. Out of 6 of...

    Hands on hatching and help

Amylynn no offense taken trust me. I don't know anything about hatching our own eggs except for what we read about. Didn't read anything about this stuff. Yes 3 of them looked like the first pics you posted and 2 like the last one that had too much moisture. Ruby sorry i didn't get any pics it...

    Hands on hatching and help

Update on the hatch. We had 6 out of 12 hatch out. The ones that were rocking and wiggling didn't make it. The 3 others just didn't fully develop. I opened them up to see what went wrong. The ones that were moving looked like the membrane vacuumed sealed around them causing them to suffocate...

    Hands on hatching and help

Thank you Ruby. They are a mix of ours and some we ordered. We are on day 23 now. Can't hear any peeping from them. Might try to candle later tonight after all my farm work is done. What if they stop shaking all together and no pip is present. I've had one of ours do that also.

    Hands on hatching and help

Hello everybody I am having a similar issue as portagee. We have had 6 hatch so far and have been moved out of the bator. We have 2 eggs in the incubator now that are shaking like the chicks are trying to come out but just can't. I want to poke a hole for them but I don't know how you can tell...

That depends on what you are feeding them and where they are being kept.

    My chick isn't growing.

it's the one on the left that hasn't feathered out yet or as you can see grown. It's baffling to us. The lighter one that is 3 over kinda looking at it is the same breed. Bought at the same time together. They are ameracaunas.

    My chick isn't growing.

Hello BYC community I have a question for you. Is it possible that a chick will not grow or feather? I have some chick's that I purchased a few weeks ago and one of them looks like it is not growing at all. It is still just as small as it was when we got it. I will try to add a pic in a little bit

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

COChix not sure if you have a definite answer or not but we use a large dog kennel as well. The little buggers will fit through the holes for about the first 2 weeks depending on breed. We are currently using an old baby pack and play to see how it works. So far is working pretty good. The only...

    Processing meat birds

Hello everyone. I have a question to pose about processing meat birds. It goes like so. I have my setup except for the plucker (I'm going to make my own) the other thing I need is my scalding pot. I have a turkey fryer base and the propane but no pot. What size pot would be best to use for this...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Hey Blooie awesome post. I plan on watching the youtube link you provided later tonight. I'm glad I found this post. We just ordered our incubator and are trying to wait patiently so we can get some eggs to hatch. We have big birds and some that are under the heat lamp now inside our kitchen...

Help. I have a dog problem

I let the chick's out of the coop and into their fenced run area. The dogs follow them around on the outside of the fence whimpering all excited. I just heard about the electric fence today from a friend at work. I think it might be just what I need. Hopefully it will keep them back and not so...

new to this whole chicken thing.

Thank you bantam fan. It's been a blast joining and I'm enjoying being a chickener (new word lol). I'm also getting some bantams to go with our other chickens.

Help. I have a dog problem

Thank you guys for the advice so far. We do have a fenced in run for the chick's. One of the offending dogs is going to reside in the backyard for a bit. The other offending dog has calmed down some. We have been lucky in having dogs that are easy to train so far.
