    RATS-Questions

What is the best rodent proof feeder and waterer you can recommend? Is there a type of rat poison that does not pose a hazard to humans or animals that come in contact with a dead rat that has consumed it?

Is something wrong with my Buff Orpington?

I really only give them maybe a cupful of scratch every few days but I didn't realize how bad it could be to over-do it. After all of my researching I am thinking there could be a possible mite or lice issue and I'm going to treat the flock and their coop in the next couple of days.

    When treating for mites...

When treating my flock for mites I know that I need to clean out the coop and treat the surfaces, but what about the run? Seems like a huge undertaking to completely clean out all of the bedding etc. in the run. Any suggestions for how best to handle this? I plan to use a permethrin poultry dust...

Is something wrong with my Buff Orpington?

Here is a close up of what the skin looks like near her vent area, any ideas?

Is something wrong with my Buff Orpington?

Would mites or lice cause a decrease in egg production? She has gone from one egg every day, skipping almost never to only giving us 2 or 3 eggs a week.

Is something wrong with my Buff Orpington?

She has been getting layer feed, scratch and occasional kitchen scraps. Our girls also free-range throughout the day. I have not supplemented calcium or oyster shell but I'm thinking I had better try that. She shares a 4x4 coop with only 3 other birds and they also have a 12x12 enclosed run, so...

Is something wrong with my Buff Orpington?

My Buff Orpington is a year old and recently has slowed down her laying drastically. (She laid almost every day throughout the winter and now we are only getting a couple of eggs a week.) Two days ago there was a soft shell egg in the coop and I think it was hers. She's also looking a bit...

    Blizzard!

Going to hang a small lantern flashlight with fresh batteries in the coop and put food and water inside, hopefully the light will stay on most of the day :)

    Blizzard!

The run is very large, a big enclosure, about 7 ft tall and 10 or 12 ft long on all sides. Any ideas for what I can use as a light source for inside the coop? Christmas lights stapled up top? I can't think of what else. I don't want a fire hazard obviously, lol.

    Blizzard!

Thanks everyone for your replies! The run is very large so I can't think of something big enough that would temporarily block the wind and not get blown over. The coop is also plenty big, the problem is that it doesn't have windows or a light source. (it does have an open vent area on top.) I...

    Blizzard!

So we are in the midst of a blizzard here in the Northeast. Currently my chickens are safe inside their coop which is inside a secure, roofed run. However the plastic coverings that we had on the sides of the run have blown off and they can't be replaced in the current weather. I'm nervous that...

    Easter Eggers...pullets or roosters?

They are about 12 weeks old... yes I thought it was interesting that one didn't have a beard but I guess the Easter Eggers can really have a lot of variation?
