Are you talking the feed or alfalfa pellets? If they like it they will eat it. I purchase alfalfa pellets for over the winter when I'm being lazy. Mine won't eat the pellet, so I put them through the grain mill and walla they have crumbles. Then they eat it just fine. If yours want...

I used to use straw back then. Now I use shredded pine bedding. Surely that can't account for the difference. I mean, they produced eggs back then, these new hens produce eggs now. Mainly, I'm curious about the difference between then and now. But I will definitely start feeding...

No, it can't be because of the breeds. I had Easter Eggers and Buff Orpington's back then, too, same as I do now. A couple of the other breeds are different. But all the eggs back then of four or five breeds were orange, and all the eggs of my four breeds now are the same--medium...

Well, I have kind of wondered if the feed quality has changed. I had chickens over ten years ago, gave them away, then got chicks again this year, and the egg yolks were a vibrant deep orange back then. Not so now. Not that they are pallid now, exactly. But they just don't have the...

Has anyone suggested trying feeding them warm water instead of cold yet? My chickens, who all hatched on June 1, are laying really well, no additional light, no free ranging, no extra heat, in SE Iowa.

Say, WHAT??? You have to actually wash chickens to show them? Oh, cripes, do you make them shave their legs, too?
You don't have to wash them but it is a very good idea if you want to do well. Clean legged birds need less washing than feather legged birds like Cochins, Brahma, and...

I have been washing birds for 2 days and have 3 left to wash getting ready for the show. Lots of time and work to get 17 Cochins(4 Blacks, 1 Birchen,1 Buff Columbian,6 Columbians, and 5 Partridge) clean and dry enough to put back in the coop. Will bring our birds on Friday sometime...
Has anybody else tried feeding their chickens sunflower seeds as a treat? I did, and within 10 days, I had my first chicken laying an egg (most of them hatched June 1, first egg early October), which I thought was kind of early for a cuckoo Marans, and now I have three, I think all different...
I still can't help but wonder if it's possible that the genetic modifications to the grains that are used to make chicken food are to blame for some of the problems. Sorry, but I am very suspicious of GM.

Wanted to mention that if you are going to MN, there are 2 shows in Oct., New Ulm, Oct. 8th and 9th, another in Hutchinson, the 29th and 30th. Both are big shows. And the one in New Ulm is at the same time as their Octoberfest! It's a busy place. Hutch is just a nice big show, well...
Near Waverly? How far from Dunkerton, my favorite pitstop on my way North? I need to do a trip to MN in the next few weeks, so it would need to be held until then, and the meeting place would need to be near 63. Any slightest chance of that? I'm down in Van Buren County, and it's a LONG trip...
