Help! Strange bugs on my new coop!

I’m not sure what those are but I my coop has suffered from mites before mine although we’re smaller and more round. We had only four chickens so we trashed the coop and bought another one and sprayed all the inside and outside with a poison that wouldn’t harm the chickens and kill all termites...

    Dust Bathing

My chicken love softer dirt for bathing and weren’t a huge fan of sand. They also love a material called eco-pet for chickens that help control smell and is a great absorbed that also provides a great bath.

    What the hole!

It’s very likely it could be a rodent if it was a smaller hole. Mice enjoy snacking on dropped chicken feed or leftovers. The plus side of rodents are that chickens can eat these animals whole if small enough rather than a snake that can cause damage. The down side is that they breed like crazy...

    Inconsistent laying in young birds?

With healthy chickens, the best egg producers take about 27 hours to produce and lay the egg. Having all hens lay an egg everyday isn’t normal. 4/6 eggs a day is fantastic and tells you that your hens are happy and healthy.

She is drinking and eating totally fine but I will file the edges just to smooth it out before it causes other complications. Thanks you so much for the help I was very worried.

    Broken Beak?

I live in Denver and am rather young to own chickens. I was sitting outside with them this morning and I noticed one of my hens had part of her top beak broken off. I am worried about how this happened and want to prevent it from occurring with my other hens. Does anyone have any ideas?

Straw or hay for nest boxes- preference?

My chickens prefer wood shavings and it seems to be pretty cheap in my area. Straw and hay are also great materials for nesting boxes but you have to be very careful as sometimes the hay or straw could carry unwanted insects that could hurt or infect your coop.

    ISO: The perfect breed

If you want a dual purpose hen Speckled Sussex and Rhode Island Reds are the way to go. They produce all year long as well as provide a good amount of meat. Although Silver Wyandotte is also a great breed of chicken.

    Disturbing a Broody Hen

You should be fine it looks like she has acclimated to your presence. I have had much unwanted broody behavior with my hens and no matter how much I touched and moved her she continued to sit on a few eggs or even nothing at all. She should have no issues with you around.

Official BYC Poll: The Worst Predator

    Bugs in Chicken Coop

Thank you so much I do think this is the issue my hens were starting to sleep in the bars out in the run and In the nesting boxes avoiding the roosts. I will try to spray this as soon as possible!

There are tiny insects everywhere inside the house of our coop. I try to hose it down but they never go away. My chickens haven’t been laying for...
