Dust Bathing

If you don't leave with more than you came for around here you just didn't try.
And the raised bed....aka chicken garden works terrific! Personally I think it is because it looks like they shouldn't be in it.

I came here for learning what others do for dust baths, and left much more enriched in the ways of toilet-bowl planters. These responses are hilarious!

My run is gravel and sand, and natural clay-mix. I am still working on what to do for a dust bath since I’m new at this, but I heard no matter how nice of a dust bath you provide, they will still find ways to create their own in a place that’s inconvenient for you.

Hi! I am working on a dust bath for my kids as well. We have clay soil here so I dug some up and sifted it through some 1/2” hardware cloth into a plastic wading pool. I buried it a bit into the run so it is about 3” above the ground level in the run. I added some diatomaceous earth (food grade) and am planning to add a bit of wood ash from the fireplace and some sand. My question is - what type of sand. I remember reading somewhere that there are different types of sand and some of them you shouldn’t use for this application. I was hoping to go to Home Depot to pick some up today if it is the “right” kind.

My chicken love softer dirt for bathing and weren’t a huge fan of sand. They also love a material called eco-pet for chickens that help control smell and is a great absorbed that also provides a great bath.
