Last September some Seramas came up for bid at a sale in Cleveland, GA. Their tail feathers had been cut presumably for hair decorations. Even with missing tail feathers thy were still nice birds. I purchased a pair for $4. New feathers have long since come in. I named them George and...
Gramps Chicken Coop
In April of 2010, I built a chicken coop with a temporary run and purchased 15 Chickens from a local grower. They were a mix of Rhode Island Reds and Americaunas. It turns out that there were only six hens. I kept the six hens (4 - RIRs and 2 Ameri.) and one rooster...
My Wine Cooler Incubator
May 7, 2011
I have Hova-bator with egg turner and while it works very well, I would like to have something a bit more durable and would like to be able to incubate multiple trays of eggs simultaneously. The incubators made from Wine Coolers were particularly interesting...
I threw out the remaining eggs this evening. Not even a pip.
All the chicks that hatched are doing well. The Bared Rocks are really cute.
Thanks to BYC I found a supplier for BLRWs within driving distance and picked up 19 eggs today. I'll be setting them in the morning.

As of this evening 12 chicks have successfully hatched. I have 8 Barred Rocks and 1 BLRW. 3 of my RIR mixes hatched. The first chick to pip a BLRW did not make it. I checked him and he was fully formed, not sure what the problem was. I am now in the evening of the 21st day and have 4 BLRW...
Well, two chicks have hatched so far today. A Barred Rock and a Australorp/RIR mix. Several more have pipped, but not zipped. One thing I've learned is not to count them before they hatch, so fingers are crossed.
I will update progress and get some pictures up.

Congrats on the new chicks. I put my eggs in lockdown this morning. It looks like I have 21 viable eggs. 9 Barred Rocks and 6 Blue Lace Red Wyandottes from eggs I purchased from a BYC seller. I have a mix of 6 RIR/Australorp/buff Orpingtons from my flock. Hopefully, we'll have some chicks...
My 3 week old chicks are drinking from the chicken nippples with no issues. If they are thirsty, I think they'll drink form whatever is available. The nipples are certainly easier from my standpoint, so I think I'll keep them. No more cleaning out the founts or pans.

I just hatched my first eggs in a Hova-bator 1602N w/ turner. It seems to work as advertised. I got 19 chicks from 31 viable eggs. I did get a few temperature spikes, but the humidity stayed pretty constant.

JCFuente51,
Don't be afraid to try again. As beginners we all make mistakes, but learn how to do better next time.
Glenmar,
I have 11 eggs to go on lockdown on Wednesday. I'm hoping they do well as I have incubated them in my homemade wine-cooler-bator. I'll lock them down in the...
It' s fun to see the world through the eyes of my grandkids. Each experience is a new adventure to them. They are always helping me keep things in a right perspective. Joy is derived from the small things in life.

Thanks! My grandkids are having a blast watching them. We raised the chicks parents from 3 day olds together, so they are excited that their chickens now have chicks. They're getting to see the circle of life in a very compressed time frame.
