Hello -
We also have no birds at the moment - we think a fox is our culprit. We sold the old coop and I'm looking for a new small one to set up after the camper leaves our back yard. And wanting to focus on a few people-loving hens. There's a rooster close by and his morning song is good enough. :)
Our hens are now a year and some months old. We lost one and have 3 remaining, two speckled sussex and one buff orpington. One of the SS, who is definitely the alpha hen, has started flogging my adult daughter who is the one who cares for them. My daughter has never mistreated them in any way...
Thanks. I know, I have read horror stories, but the coop is movable from place to place in the yard, so no wire below ground level. Otherwise, they do get locked up every evening so I believe it would be safe at night.
Thank you for the warm welcome. Our chicken ownership is a joint venture and is on my daughter's property. It is not predator proof and in our discussions, I have been gently overruled. Their house is in a subdivision. She has a tall privacy fence and even though most predators (foxes, raccoons...
Hi, my daughter and I started with 4 chicks in May of this year. They are now 10-11 weeks old and look like mini chickens. We are in Crawfordsville, IN. This has been quite the adventure, from finding the cost on a pre-made coop :)eek:) to fears about one of the chicks sex, to discovering how...
I'm glad you mentioned pecking your eye. My 3 year old grandson was squatting to feed our pullets treats. One came up and pecked his eye, fortunately only getting the eyelid. The same pullet had tried once before and just hit his face. We are now trying to teach him not to let them near his face.
She does have access to dust baths, one of which has DE in it. We haven't seen anything on her yet. And the germicide powder used on her was purple so the others would not see it as a target. And the sore places seem to be where she is getting pin feathers.
We had put an antibiotic powder on the raw spots (it's purple), but maybe these photos can help anyhow. The area on her neck is just irritated looking, not oozing or weeping.
UPDATE: Our barred rock is still very slow at feathering, but coming along at 7-8 weeks. However, on her wings, there are bony corners (you cans see that area in the photos above) and where those are, the feathers are trying to come in, but the skin in those places looks raw and oozes. Any...
Hi, We have 4 chicks of which one is a Barred Rock. They are about 6 weeks old and were all supposed to be hens, but the Barred Rock, while larger than the other chicks (Speckled Sussex and Buff Orpington), she is very slow for feather development. We are in fear of her being a rooster as we...
