I let them go. We have a wooded backyard and a large open meadow. The stay out back and are out usually til 6:30 when one of them summons the others into the coop. They have access anytime to the nest boxes and food, so are out and in all day. We also have hawks and fox but so far so good...
Don't have a clear answer for you, but I would call the federal game commission in your state and ask. I know there are laws about possessing dead game birds with or without tags, but this bird is alive and isn't being harmed , and can go as she pleases. I would wonder if disease could be...
Not a doctor but know a bit about deer. Could it be the picky glands on the deer? Not sure why they would be bleeding though. Sometimes they can become impacted.
Ok, so how many of you folks include your chickens in the family Christmas picture. Last year I sent out a few to chicken friendly friends and they loved them, but I don't want people to think I'm crazy or anything...LOL
Hugs to you.
Our EE rooster was beautiful, but wasn't part of our plan last year when ordering. He had been ok, but my kids were afraid of him, and he had an attitude around my DH. Two weeks ago he came at me in the coop, and I decided enough of that, he had to go. It was not easy or pleasant...
Yep, its wonderful to watch. I was hesitant about letting mine free range, so I let them out in the evening. They eat bugs, worms and anything they find, like to see what is happening on our porch deck and are very good at staying out back. Right before sundown they file back into the coop and...
they got the leftover sweet corn and my cochin found a really yummy treat, or at least she was very interested in it. Before I could take it away she ate a luna moth caterpillar, eeew! I was hoping it would not make her sick, but she is fine.
How do you remove this from skin? I finally got around to spraying it on my rooster who is trying to grow back his tail feathers. Now three fingers are covered, and I have places to go....
She is beautiful. We have a doe with twins this year. Every morning and around sun down they come out and the fawn love to romp and run across the meadow. They run as fast as they can, and the mother just looks on as if they are crazy.
we hired an FFA student to come twice a day. I left with feeders/waterers full and they were given instructions where the food was along with phone numbers in case of emergency, and egg cartons for the eggs they could keep. It works out well. I tried to convince my parents to take the chickens...
Thanks Opa, I did put it in boiling water, but the jam was hot, the jars were hot, probably just too hot. The rest of the jam I made the old way, no water bath, and so far is ok. Thanks for your help.
Hopefully someone here can help me.
My DH's grandmother taught me to make canned strawberry jam 25 years ago. It did not involve water bath canning at the end, I simply sterilized, filled, capped and turned my jars over for 5 min, then set upright and left for 24 hours. This method though I know...
Most of your questions have been answered. As far as treats, don't go crazy. I started giving mine scrambled egg and yogurt at 2 weeks. Later I tried mealworms and fresh greens. I chop them small and also have grit available.
Heres what I did. I went to the grocery store in town and asked for an empty canteloupe crate. It was cardboard with a pallet bottom. Perfect, but you'll need a truck to get it home. They just throw them away usually. It was big enough for 15 babies until they turned 6 weeks and moved to the coop.
