I am really glad to hear she pooped! I am unsure she could have coccidiosis, because the incubation period is 2-5 days. She would have had to have been infected as soon as she hatched. Of course if any of the eggs in the incubator were contaminated(had poop or dirt on them), or the incubator...
You are welcome. I hope your little one perks up and does better.
Here is a website about duramycin 10, in case you don't have instructions on the package. It seems to say the usual dosage is 1-2 tsp per gallon which would be 1/4 to 1/2 tsp per quart, or 1/8 to 1/4 tsp per pint...
Thank you for explaining your setup, it sounds like you have everything taken care of. I always tried to keep my draft guard about 18 inches high, but yours probably is just fine in a still room with a steady warm room temperature; especially if your other chicks are doing fine. I hope none...
If I were you I would find some way to measure the temperature down at the chick level, at several different spots in the brooder. I know too well how easy it is to assume the temp is steady everywhere. I had several problems with that myself. To keep myself from making the same mistake...
Hello,
I am responding here, instead of returning the pm. If I remember right, when I had chicks that were doing that, they were otherwise healthy, eating, etc. I never did figure out what the crackling was, but I gave them all a round of tetracycline and to be honest, I don't really know...
Illia- I was pretty sure she is a mixed breed- or maybe just mixed variety of wyandotte. I got the egg from someone whose chickens were a mixed batch(surprise special) from Ideal last year(I don't know what kinds exactly). It is certainly more likely that she would be a mix. I'm okay with...
That does make sense if she is a Columbian Wyandotte, since she was gray like they are as chicks. That is why I was unsure about the other breeds suggested, because they are yellow as chicks. I can't wait to see what she looks like full grown!
Thanks again!
Ok, that really helps! Thanks all, for your input. I guess I can just wait for the first egg from her!
Nikkumz, that picture really does help, thanks.
sevenbabychicks- thanks, I really love my barred rocks! They are very sweet.
I don't think that poster was saying that she was a meat cross(cornish crossed with rock).
Just that she looked like a cross with cornish.
I would imagine there would be lots of those crosses that wouldn't necessarily mean a shorter life, or health trouble.
I would agree that if she were a...
This girl(I hope) is about 16 weeks old, probably a mix. I got the egg from someone whose stock is from Ideal's surprise straight run last spring. She was gray when she was hatched. She is pretty timid, and quiet. She is low on the pecking order, but my girls have enough room to roam, they...
Sorry no one has responded yet, sometimes it takes a little while. I haven't had that experience myself, but I think I read on byc a similar post, and the chicken had botulism? Maybe doing a search along those lines will find you some useful information. I think someone had one that had...
It sounds like you may be talking about "cecal" poo, I think it is called. I wouldn't describe it as watery, but it could be I guess, if the chick drinks lots of water. If it is cecal poo, it won't be every poop, something like 1 in 9, I think. That is normal. Do a search for cecal poo, and...
Newly hatched chicks can survive for 2-3 days without food. I have not heard of many success stories with chicks being in the mail for four days. Can you choose a quicker shipping method, or find a closer hatchery? I would read some of the stories on here about chicks in transit for more than...
