Crown Point here. Northwest corner of the state, about 60 minutes north of Lafayette.
Six hens total - 1 buff rock, 1 buff orpington, 1 white plymouth rock, 1 cuckoo marans, and 2 rhode island reds. 3 of the 6 started laying last week.
I think what the OP meant was that they did not eat any eggs that were produced in the first two weeks of laying due to the inclusion of any elements that get passed from the medicated feed the hens were on prior to switching them to layer feed.
I had not heard this before either, but I'm...
Just curious to know if anyone is supplementing with oyster shell or anything else when using Dumor Layer Crumbles. I have 6 hens, 3 of which have just started laying. I've switched over to the Layer Crumbles. Dumor says there is no need to supplement with anything, but I do read a lot about...
I have two Rhode Island Reds. They are both 4 months old and I'm questioning whether one is a rooster or not.

The coop and run are pretty secure. Not too worried about predators at this point. More worried about the transition from indoors to outdoors and the cool weather.
I went with a prefab coop, secured with a solid base lined with hardware mesh. Nothing will dig under or break through to my chicks.
Thanks for the quick reply. These are my first chicks, so there are no other hens to worry about. It's still cool here (in the 60's at night), so I wanted to make sure they would be ok.
Would be interested to hear when I can consider moving chicks to the outdoors and into the coop. They will be 1 month old on June 8 and are currently in a large dog crate. I'm located about 40 miles southeast of Chicago, so overnights are still a little chilly, but daytime temps are in the...
My chicks are just over a week old, but I'm starting to think ahead about what I can feed them once they get past the 10 week mark.
We juice often, so I'm definitely going to provide them with the pulp leftovers from the juicing. This got me to thinking...are there any foods that are...
Just got my 6 chicks last Wednesday!! 1 barred rock, 1 white plymouth rock, 2 buff orpingtons, and 2 rhode island reds. Ordered from Meyers and all 6 seem to be doing well on starter feed 20% and plain water. Eager to see how quickly they grow, but enjoying their cuteness as chicks.
