Trying to decide- repair/upgrade coop that came with the house or start from scratch?

Hey everyone, I think that my plan for the moment is to build an A-Frame coop/tractor and I'll use the old coop for a while if I cannot complete it in time. I'll certainly pressure wash/bleach the old coop before I use it. I have searched a few threads on BYC for plans, but I am waiting to...

Trying to decide- repair/upgrade coop that came with the house or start from scratch?

Thank you for posting that! I went back to check and avoided a huge mistake- it was regular chicken wire, not even the 1/4 hardware cloth. Very fair point about the mites- not something I had thought about. Speaking from total ignorance, the coop has been empty for a little over a year at...

Trying to decide- repair/upgrade coop that came with the house or start from scratch?

Thanks so much everyone. I found what I think is a good deal from home depot- 300ft of HWC for under $300- 20 gauge 1/4". Should be able to give me an apron all around the coop along with mostly covering the walls. I'll get some netting to keep the hawks and bald eagles from getting snacks from...

Trying to decide- repair/upgrade coop that came with the house or start from scratch?

This is such a common sense answer I'm embarassed that I didn't think about it- even though it is EXACTLY what I did with my actual house. Use what I have for a while until I figure out if I hate it or not. Gives me a lot more time to worry about designing a hoop coop tractor anyway!

Trying to decide- repair/upgrade coop that came with the house or start from scratch?

Hey everyone! Got my chicks purchased (six Rhode Island Reds) and now that it isn't -40F/C outside, I went to take a look at the coop that came with the house when I bought it a year ago. The run is about 10ft/3m by 11ft/3.3m, while the coop itself is TECHNICALLY about 8ft by 4ft. However, the...

Yet another person tired of paying supermarket egg prices!

I think the price of eggs was more the final straw that made me decide! I know there's no way I could ever compete with the price of industrialized chicken farms. But my thinking is that if I have to pay an extraordinary amount of money for eggs, at least I can monitor what goes into the...

Yet another person tired of paying supermarket egg prices!

Thanks! I'll upload photos of the coop that was left here by the previous owners of the house whenever the snow melts

    (1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I helped my parents with chickens, but have only gotten the urge to get my own recently. Between supermarket prices and just wanting to get more self sufficient, I think chickens are a great way to get into livestock on a smaller...
