    50 Layers, 5 eggs today

I have a little over 50 layers, a mixture of brown layers, olive eggers, and 3 silkie hens, in 3 different pens. They are fed with a standard layer pellet ration, cracked corn for winter, household scraps, and bread store rejects. The bread keeps costs down, and is a dietary treat and not a...

How to DYE CHICKS before they hatch?

Wow I retract what i said about a market being here. People buy these chicks not knowing about brooder lights etc... which kill the chicks in short order. Where in asia they buy these birds dyed as a novelty, but also respect they will feed their families in the long run.

How to DYE CHICKS before they hatch?

I saw a video on youtube from asia somewhere I beleive, where a "Hatchery" had a bunch of chicks and they had this bottled dye, and these large stainless steel bowls, and they would put a bunch of chicks in the bowl, and added some of the dye and tossed them by hand like one would a salad with a...

In my last hatch 3 days ago, one egg pipped and had a pool of blood mixing in the water, and this tiny black chick emerged, and he is the rowdiest chick I have so far. Another clutch in the incubator started hatching yesterday morning. There is no blood in the incubator, but the smell is twice...

Emergency: 2 day olds pecking just hatched. How long can I leave then in the bator?

I put in some dry paper towels to try to absorb the moisture in the incubator, and had 4 more hatch. No fly Zone is still bright eyed and jumped at me chirping wildly. Cupped him in my hands and he nestled down. Had to put him back which he did not like. Some have shown signs of drying but they...

Emergency: 2 day olds pecking just hatched. How long can I leave then in the bator?

The first go round was eating chick starter within hours of their fluffiness, and there is plenty of water. I have two brooder rooms, it is too late at night for a hair dryer, the kid has to be at work at 4, and the OL well she is a good cook, and I would die of starvation. The pecked chick is...

    Yay!!! New hatch

Yay have some new baby chicks, one question, how long can they stay in the incubator before they to the brooder with 2 day old chicks? I posted this one trying to be upbeat compared to my last post, thinking an upbeat post would garner more replies to the most crucial questions than a...

Emergency: 2 day olds pecking just hatched. How long can I leave then in the bator?

I have a staggered hatch going on. The 2 day old chicks are pecking the just hatched ones. I have never seen this and have mixed week old hatchery chicks from the FS with day olds with no problems. Here in Missouri right now the humidity is so high even with a dry incubator the humidity is off...

    Weird Egg with Umbilical Cord

It is called a chalaise(sp?) There are two it holds the yolk in the middle of the egg, it is perfectly normal, it unwinds as the egg gets older and usually is not seen in store bought eggs. Think of it as a natural bungee cord.
