    Prepping for winter ugh

These hydrants are great in providing water at the coop eliminating the need to haul water from a house faucet. But, you can't just leave them open to provide water to an automated system since they will freeze when water is not being drawn by the automated system. So, having read the advice...

Lockdown Rules Violated by First Chick to Hatch!

So I'm wondering why I read that on day 18 when lockdown begins, that you should tun off or remove whatever egg turning mechanism your incubator employs because "the chick now need to position themselves to hatch". And then close the incubator not to be opened again until the chicks have...

Long Leg Feathers (Not Foot Feathers)

Thanks. The hocks on the orange specked bird are pretty much what I am getting.

Long Leg Feathers (Not Foot Feathers)

When my vulture hock birds fully feather out from molting I'll update this with new photos. The vulture hock feathers on my birds are longer, stronger (firmer), and less fluffy than the pictures I'm seeing of vulture hocks both here and when doing images searches on the web.

Long Leg Feathers (Not Foot Feathers)

Thank you both. That nails it... "vulture hocks". Although, I like my thinking they are "Hermes feathers" to be a nicer label. So reading about the contributing genes, do Brahmas ever show up with this? It seems that by crossing a Chochin and a Brahma the foot feathers of the F1 offspring...

Long Leg Feathers (Not Foot Feathers)

I have birds with 6 inch feathers with a strong shaft that extend rearward from their upper leg. They aren't the fluffy feathers usually found in that area as seen on the gold laced cochin hen below. They remind me of the feathers extending from the ankles of the Greek god Hermes, but on these...

    Rooster Behavior

Some roosters are just not aggressive and will accept your presence without confrontation. But the others are as you say, are "roosters", and becoming top dog is their nature. In flocks where two or more roosters seem to get along without constant confrontation, those roosters have already...

Gold Laced French Black Copper Marans?

Sorry it took me a while to answer but here is a photo of the dark eggs I am getting from these gold laced cochins. Colors in photos and on monitors will vary but this looks accurate to me on my Microsoft Surface 3 screen. The lighter eggs could be from black or gray cochins or from a buff...

Bantam and Large Fowl Cochin crosses official thread! *many photos are welcome!*

Looking at the above photo of Bootsie (Red bantam Cochin X LF Buff Brahma cockerel), he looks pretty much the same as my buff brahma rooster. And given the similarities between brahmas and cochins (not with regard to breed standards but to the casual observer who sees a large, plump bird with...

    Gold Laced Wyandotte/Cooper Marans cross

Thank you. I've searched the web for G L Cochins and saw many birds that look just like mine... I'm convinced.

Gold Laced French Black Copper Marans?

Thank you. Gold Lace Cochin makes sense and it wouldn't matter to me as I'm just playing and not trying to breed to a standard. And having now searched the web for Golden Laced Cochins I'm finding birds that look just like mine. However, I'm getting dark eggs. I'll post an egg photo in a day...

    Gold Laced Wyandotte/Cooper Marans cross

Sorry, somehow managed to post this twice and I posted photos at the other thread. Another response offered that I might have a cochin style bird with gold lacing. But regardless, I'll post two photos here and follow up with a photo of their dark eggs in a day or two.

Gold Laced French Black Copper Marans?

I purchased some pullets at a local feed store that were labeled as Dark Copper Marans. They have feathered feet so I assume they are the French variety. Now that they have matured they do lay very dark eggs, although not as dark some photos I have seen. The first eggs were darker but now...

    Gold Laced Wyandotte/Cooper Marans cross

I purchased what were labeled as Dark Copper Marans pullets at a local farm supply and they have all matured to have the gold laced coloration of a gold laced Wyandotte... but with feathered feet as I would expect from a French Dark Copper Marans chicken. I'm not disappointed since I like the...
