Here is my coop. Built with free 8ft x 4ft heavy duty pallets and a block foundation (also free)... roof was expensive. siding is just cheap panel siding. Dirt floor. The coop housed 24 chickens at one point and wasn't crowded.
One thing is for sure, no one can say there isn't enough...
That was going to be my suggestion. I had a rooster that started pecking at my then 2 year old son...got him in the face a couple times. He also got a little aggressive with my Dad when he was feed the chickens while we were away (he couldn't collect the eggs). He never bothered me or my wife...
This was my 3rd batch of chicks using heating pads. First batch was in an unheated garage in mid February 2017 lost 7 of 35 over a couple weeks, 6 of the 7 had pastey butt. 2nd batch I did outside but it was May ish I think...only lost 1 of 28 @ ~3 weeks. I think this is the first time I've lost...
New chicks arrived this morning, they all seemed fine. Dipped their beaks and put them inside my homemade heated cave. I watched them for awhile and 1 or 2 would occasionally come out explore and go back inside. I also got a single guard goose.
I sectioned off a portion of my main coop for the...
Thanks for the help. The mystery is solved. We've all been speculating for since they arrived which one might be the rare bird. It wasn't until a few weeks ago that #2 started looking different.
Araucanas/Ameraucanas is what they were listed as but the descriptions says the bloodlines are a...
I ordered chicks from Murray McMurray and included the free rare chick but can't figure out what it is...or even which one it might be.
The breeds I ordered (all female) are:
Araucanas/Ameraucanas
Black Australorps
New Hampshires
All hatched 02/22/2017.
Rare chic candidates:
#1: All...
Chicken math is easy. My plan was to slowly (over 3 years) build a flock to 18 hens and then buy 6 started pullets and cull 6 oldest birds each year to keep them young and productive. I started with 8 last year, 3 died bringing me down to 5. I'm hen sitting 2 older birds for a friend while she...
I had intended to take pictures and write a blog post about the brooder construction but didn't start building it until the weekend before the chicks were due so that didn't happen. I'll try and describe what I did and show the few pictures I do have.
The base is a 4ft x 8ft pallet. The 6...
I wonder if some breeds are just more susceptible to pasty butt? I seem to be pulling poop off the NH's far more than the others and have lost more NH's. I don't think any of the black australorps have had it.
Usually some of the down comes off with the poop but beyond that I haven't trimmed any. I haven't tried putting any oil on them but that is a good suggestion, I may try that if I have time in the morning before work. They arrived noisy and vibrant and appeared to be healthy...no pasty butt. It...
So far to date I've lost 5 chicks; 4 NH and 1 Ameraucana.
All the dead chicks did have pasty butt so I'm assuming that's what they died of. I've also cleared pasty butt probably 20+ times over the weekend. The one downside to the MHP is not being able to see all the chicks and since my brooder...
I know I've searched in the past with no luck but last night I found this http://www.avianaquamiser.com/posts/How_much_food_do_chicks_need__63__/ if anyone else is wondering how much feed.
If my math is correct (and the chart on that page accurate) an 8 week old chicken will have consumed...
