    Special Treats!!

It is easier to stay away from them all together than to pick out what parts can be given and what can't. To be honest they are just carbs that the chicken doesn't need anyhow. There are many more nutritious treats that are available. If you are going to use the mindset of, if humans eat...

    Special Treats!!

I would recommend not feeding potatoes to chickens anymore, they are known to be toxic to them.

Planning for next year and cover crops...

I always have the same problem with weeds, I have considered "Hot Boxing" which is where you cover the ground in plastic for a few warm weeks and it bakes the ground killing everything including the roots and any seeds left behind. Buddy of mine does this with plastic from one of the big box...

what crops do you have coming to the table?

Thanks, I just wish I had more room for garden. We made our first batch of pickles, didn't like the outcome so we will be trying a different recipe next time. We just got the Ball blue book so I think we will try one from there. Anyone have any good canning recipes? We plan on doing corn...

    Special Treats!!

Ours love to get in the into the strawberry bushes. We normally let them have whatever is left after we get our harvest. They still check the plants when we let them out to free range in the afternoons to make sure no more have grown. They also seem to like our petunias and forsythia bush...

what crops do you have coming to the table?

This is what we harvested over the weekend. As you can see we are getting overrun with Cucumbers, but that is okay because we are going to be doing pickles this year. I love the summer because it means I don't have to buy any produce when doing my grocery shopping. I have already made one...

    First Egg Countdown!!

Today makes week 21 for the two oldest Australorps and we are on our third egg. Pretty sure they are all for the same hem but who knows. Here is a picture I took off her in her best box doing her business. And a picture of the little present she left. Can't wait until they all start laying...

    planting marigolds

WOW, those plants are huge!! You must have some really good soil. I hope to get my garden soil in better shape the next few years. I have been adding organic matter each fall and tilling it in each spring and it seems to be helping.

    planting marigolds

Sounds like you got African Marigolds by mistake. They grow to 2-3 feet before flowering. my wife did the same thing a couple years back.

Help the deer are taking over my garden

We had similiar issues when we first started our garden. Got so bad we thought the neighbors were stealing from us. We had a tomatoe plant full of almost ripe fruit (What made it worse was we had to wait so long to get the first set to ripen) and the next morning every one of them was gone...

    So, what is your job?

I am a Forecast and Staffing Analyst for a Cable TV Company. Kind of boring and stuck at a desk for 9 hours a day, but it pays the bills. At this point I am just grateful that I have a job!

Tell me the best way to cut Hardware cloth!

My compressor was not big enough to use an air tool so I bought a $1.50 cutting wheel and put it on my angle grinder and cut through it like butter!

Needing some help in Shelby County KY

Got an update. I had my wife stop by our local Ag. extension office to talk to them and see if they would be willing to join us in getting the zoning regulations changed. She spoke to a nice man by the name of Walt Reichert, he is charge of the Fur and Feathers 4H group that Shelby county has...

Help sexing 4 Wk Old Black Australorps

Yes, it was definitely a rooster, we moved him out to the country at a family members property. They have 15 acres and already had chickens so they will add to the bloodlines already established out there. It was a shame too, they were so nice and friendly. The other 2 are still by far the...
