    Chicken can't walk

I don't think she was egg-bound - just one egg and 1 yolk. Next time, I should have another adult around who can take pictures. I was trying to get it done quick (husband is out of town, kept kids entertained with TV, 3 year old came out in the middle. 5 year old understood it was for the...

    Chicken can't walk

Broken wing. Dispatched her this morning. There was also a LARGE amount of fat in her abdomen (about as much fat as internal organs, once the egg was removed.)

    Chicken can't walk

I gave her Nutridrench earlier. She's got wing paralysis now - can't even hold her head up. Belly is hot to the touch.

    Chicken can't walk

She is laying down. She tried to run just now when the cat walked by - she can't even stand - just flapped a wing and shifted about two inches. She is about 7-8 months old.

    Chicken can't walk

Legs are under her, not limp. Wings able to flap. Bright eyed and alert. Eating well. Just can't walk. Marek's is the first thing that comes to mind after looking her over and not finding anything. Tiny bit of blood in very solid droppings (more like regular bird droppings - white with...

    Toddlers are Quackers

No cows (I don't handle cow's milk well). But we are seriously considering goats whenever I find time to put up REALLY good fences. :lau

    Toddlers are Quackers

I'm gettin' DUCKS, ya'll! (Husband's co-worker has muscovies. We're gonna get 2, 'cause that's what we have space for in the coop. They are willing to exchange drakes for hens, since they raise them for meat)

    Marans eggs soft/thin and pale?

I gather the most likely cause for her sudden soft/thin, pale, calcium-deposit-covered shells is due to an infection. She was attacked by a fox a few days prior to the first soft egg. She was also laying an egg a day, and laid two the first soft-shelled day. They are back to a normal...

How long do I wait? (Broody?)

...OK, let me re-phrase this, because she growled and ran off after 3 hours. How long does it take to tell the difference between a chicken being a brat about the favorite nesting box and a chicken being broody?

How long do I wait? (Broody?)

I'm new at this. How long do I wait after a hen seems broody to get hatching eggs to put under her? Our eggs are not fertilized, and she's very protective of a wooden egg at the moment. Or my hand if I get it under her. (Not sure if I will get eggs, but I may have to make the choice soon.)

    Toddlers are Quackers

My rooster died almost 3 weeks ago. Made 10 eggs for mine and the kids' dinner, and about half were fertilized. Definitely not telling the kids.

    Toddlers are Quackers

"I think you need to use the potty." "I don't NEED to! Um... Be right back... ... Mommy, my undies are wet. Can you get me dry ones?" "WHY didn't you pee in the potty?" "Ugh! I *did*. (adding under her breath) I just forgot to take them off."
