    new rooster

It's a good idea to hold them in seperate areas if you can. I've done both. They have a pecking order they will get things settled. Some breeds are more gentle and will naturally be at the bottom of that order. Just watch them and look for signs of being pecked at. I've also used blinders with...

How long to leave eggs under a mama

I've let my mama sit for up to a week longer. I've candeled eggs that are left after three days and saw movement. Must have been a late lay. I figured when she left the nest one morning to get some food and water a hen layed an egg in her box and that's why is was so late. I've also broke open...

    what's digging into my coop???

Probably a weasel but rats also dig that size hole. Did you burry any fence? Might need to do that if you hens survive this attack in the spring. Right now I would research natural oder deterants. Coyote urine works for many animals and will not come near this scent. You can find it online at...

Can anyone give me some 12x12 coop advice?

Just make sure you have posts (4x4 treated) in the ground at least 2 feet to prevent frost from pushing them out of the ground. If you live in a cold climate. Good luck. Anything you build they will be happy with.

Help me to isolate my coop plz :)

I have a large 20x20 coop with about 20 hens. Alot more space than required. I also have two open screen windows in the coop that stay open year round. Temp in winter can get down to negative temps. I use a wall heater. They sit by it when they are cold and they lay at night huddled next to each...

Can I throw some horse manure in the coop

I do the deep litter for my large chicken coop. 20'x20'. I keep about 20 chickens. It works for me. I clean out twice a year down to the dirt. Little to no smell from my coop. I put down new shavings down every other month or so or when it needs it. I would not hesitate to do some horse manure...

    Losing chickens

It might be an owl. Owls leave nothing but feathers. Make sure you flock is shut up even in dusk time. Feed them at that time to draw them in. And if it's something else make sure you house is shut up tight! No holes. Last resort, red light and a night stake out with a 22 gun and go a hunting.

    Chicken/egg Business

Are you planning on doing seperate breeds or just one? Have seperate pens for each breed. I've seen a good setup before. Talk to your state egg board. They will have guidlines for you and any licensing that you may need.

    Integrating 16 week old chicks

You should be fine to do it now. There will always be an order established when introducing new ones to the flock. The young roos will not be a threat to the main roo until they are older. They figure that out as well. Just keep an eye out for over agression.

    Dog Attack!!!

Last time I had two big box mix dogs in my duck pen at night. Woke up to the dicks going crazy! My husband grabbed the gun and ran out the back door in his undies. Shot the dog one dog on the spot. The other ran away. That was a year and a half ago. The one who was injured healed up but walks...

    rat trouble

We had a rat problem in our coop. Our solutions was... 1) Put up food about 12in off ground. We hung it from the celing. 2) We bought rat bait stations where the bait was linked in with the box so it could not be drug out. We stationed them to where we thought they were coming in. 3) We...
