My first chicken I bought myself

Be present and enjoy him. Talk to him. If you're loving him, he will know it.

Things you wish you could say

The laws of physics have not changed. Do not tailgate. Allow room between your car and those around you. Cars on highways should not be stacked up like crackers in a sleeve speeding down the road.

    New chicken lover with questions

I will often go into the forums whether or not I have a specific question. You will learn so much by doing this. It is good to arm yourself with tidbits of information so that when you do have another problem you know where to go for more information. Good job on keeping that new one alive!

    Feeding Mixed Age Flock

I would like to read about all-flock as it might be an option for us. For now, I have 4 - 1yo and 3 - 3+yo. They are all laying. They are getting 16% pellets, which I alternate between dry and fermented. OS and grit are readily available to them all. They forage about two hours per day and get a...

How do you guys put your eggs out for sale?

I just inherited three additional chickens, so we have eggs galore. I have considered selling them, too. How much are y'all charging?

Poll - Diatomaceous Earth. Yes or No?

I use it sparingly in the girls' dustbath and under their nesting pads. Hopefully, this statement does not set me up for disappointment, but we have not had any problems with bugs on the girls or in their coop.

Topic of the Week - Nest boxes

I have three nesting boxes on the floor of the coop and have used both pine shavings and nesting pads. For close to a year now, I have preferred pads. With the pads, I feel confident sprinkling DE underneath each pad and have no insect problems. The pads are also easily shaken out if a mess...

Rehomed with red and naked necks

If it were me, I would immediately put them on good, healthy appropriate feed, give them a couple of hours of foraging time daily, and keep their surroundings quiet and stress free. Of course, there are so many people on BYC who know much more than I do, and you will hear from them soon on your...

    Not an Afterthought

Over the month of May, I was gifted three beautiful hens from two different sources: a French Cuckoo Marans that was at the bottom of the pecking order in her previous flock, one Buff and one Blue Orpington, both traumatized by predator attacks that only left the two of them alive. Before the...

    Hi, I'm Kathleen from CT...

It's so nice to meet you, Kathleen. It sounds like you're ready for your new feathered kids. Surely, you will love yours as much as this BYC group does theirs. Be sure to ask questions when you are unsure of something. Good, solid assistance will come along very quickly.
