Bobwhite Quail with Japanese Quail - Bad idea?

I agree with twocrowsranch. Bobwhites are aggressive birds and it is best not to mix quail species do to their natures but their are exceptions. For example I have a California Quail in my aviary with my Coturnix because his mate was eaten and I cant stand to have one of any kind of bird. But I...

    Outdoor aviary birds, any advice?

Those are all wonderful birds to have in aviaries! My diamonds are kept outside year round and have no problem with it, as long as they have proper protection from the wind. I enclosed the top and my aviary (the last 4 feet) with corrugated roofing and it works wonders! It lets in light but...

    Outdoor aviary birds, any advice?

Diamond doves are a great addition to any aviary, they are relatively easy to find, fairly affordable as well as theya re beautiful and easy going birds!

    Coturnix wire floors.

I found half inch wire isnt the best because its not as durable and its a pain to clean since the droppings build up. Once my Coturnix are about 3-4 weeks old they are moved to a 1 inch by half inch wire bottom cage which works well, it lets all droppings through, its sturdy and strong but...

Can button quail live happily in a jungle?

In the wild they breed in pairs (most birds do) but most people will raise Buttons (and other breeds) in trios or flocks so they they have less injuries to one female, higher fertile egg production and a better ratio for less fighting. Button Quail can do quite well in jungle type aviaries, I...

    Pheasants and Quail

If they were Coturnix Quail I wouldn't worry as they're pretty hardy and could stand up to disease. But Valley's are very sensitive to diseases and parasites so I wouldn't keep them together. As long as the chicks are raised on wire then it should be fine. But just seeing as the Valley's are...

    How much space?

I cant help you find any Ostriches, just keep on the hunt for them but, Ostriches need about a quarter acre to keep a happy breeding pair. They can get aggressive and need to be able to run and strengthen their legs like a lot of other birds. The more space you can give them the better, as well...

    Coturnix and Bobwhites?

Bobwhites are veryy veryy aggressive towards other quail. Their are stories of people keeping some Bobwhites with other quails but I would not recommend it. It might work for a couple days but I guarantee that the Coturnix wont last. Coturnix require very little space, you could build him a...

Just got a purple egg from my Corturnix quail!! Is this common?!?

Their are white egg laying Coturnix, a man named Perry Schofield breeds them as well as blue egg layers. The white egg is pretty good, which you can breed and concentrate into a white egger gene after a few tricky generations of breeding. How ever the other one is a no go. Its just caused from...

How big should a quail coop and run be?

If you have Snowflake Bobs you will want to make sure they have a little more room then regular Northerns which is around 2sqft per bird, and the more space the better! If you plan on having 12 bird max (if you already have 7 hens I imagine you will have a good ratio and wont need to worry too...

    Chukar Chick Questions

Well how far away from McMurray do you live? Too me that sounds like you did pretty well. Chukar chicks dont ship too well, they arent as hardy as chickens or ducklings and considering this is one of the first Chukar shipments of the year thats quite understandable that you would lose birds. I...

    New to Emu Keeping...Help!

I myself just got three emu chicks, they are 3 days old and starting to walk around a bit more. They havent eaten much, but im not to worried about that since most chicks live off the yolk for a couple days any ways. But I was curious about how much room I should be giving them so they can...

    platinum and silver coturnix quails

Perry Schofield has done an amazing job at keeping the silver gene going in Canada he is the major breeder and one of the few in Canada keeping them going. He has worked out a deal with someone in the U.S. to trade birds so all you quail lovers in the states should keep an eye out, they will be...

    Hey you Barbary keepers...

It is certainly not big enough to have happy birds. You should be able to give each pair about 30 sq feet if you want them to breed and be happy. The more rom the better. I dont know anyone who has them in a smaller set up then that. I recommend you give them a lot more room.
