I have 6 female bobwhites in an aviary with 3 silver pheasants. I also now have one male Coturnix (thanks to everyone who helped identify him for me!!). He was wild, and was found as the only surviving "chick," as the mother and fellow chicks had been killed by a cat in a barn. I wasn't there so I don't have any more information, but was given this bird (I named him Cricket).

I would like to place him out with the Bobwhites and pheasants. I do have a large pen inside the aviary that the bobwhites sleep in at night. I would like to place him in the large pen so they can get used to him before letting him loose. I have also just finished treating everyone with sinusitis treatments (it's very wet here and we just got over a nasty sickness that took half our birds :( Chickens and all of my male quails). They have all been wormed as well. Do Coturnix and bobwhites breed? I would love to get some eggs from them, the bobwhites did lay a few weeks ago but none hatched. The bobwhites are old, at 2 years.

Thank you!

Can you explain why you would want to breed a coturnix and bobwhites? I'm not understanding the logic.

Are you wanting just eggs? The hens will lay whether there is a roo present or not. Two year old hens may not accept a much younger male as their mate regardless. I just don't think that it's a good idea personally, and especially not if you are planning to sell any birds that result, although I kind of doubt if it would work. Maybe try to find him a couple young female coturnix to keep him entertained.

I keep Texas A&M and Japanese together but my Bobwhites are kept as far away as possible... the bobwhites killed three unlucky day old common pheasant chicks that strayed too far from their mother...

Bobwhites are veryy veryy aggressive towards other quail. Their are stories of people keeping some Bobwhites with other quails but I would not recommend it. It might work for a couple days but I guarantee that the Coturnix wont last. Coturnix require very little space, you could build him a small pen and get him a girl friend and he will be extremely happy!

Thank you for all of the replies!

Yes, I was intending to get eggs from the bobwhites and wasn't sure if they would lay by themselves as they were when there were male bobwhites but not once the males were gone.

It sounds like I will need to keep him separate, so I will try and figure out a new arrangement for him. Thank you very much!! Are there any other quail that the coturnix might do well with? I'm unsure of how to handle his situation as he is all alone but I don't know anyone with coturnixes, just bobwhites.

Thank you!!

They will live with pretty much anything that doesn't kill them

Alrighty then, so the coturnix is easily placed with other birds who are friendly towards them? I am hoping to find young coturnixes so I can get them used to being handled and then he will have some buddies who will br friendly and tame.

Thank you!
