So uh, haven’t updated in a little bit, but may have gone overboard in the quail department... Here’s my hatches from 2020 for the doc @Kiki
4/1/2020 HG 21 set, 20 fertile, 2 EQ, 18 hatched
5/18/2020 HG 35 set, 33 fertile, 6 EQ, 27 hatched

You’re in luck, I was just butchering some healthy males today and was able to snap a few pics of what the lungs look like in spatchcocked birds. Hopefully these images will help clarify!
To orient you, the head is downwards and I’ve started a cut alongside the spine.
If you open up the cut...
First 2 eggs from @Kiki ‘s pansy fees yesterday! My own that were hatched at the same time are slacking... I think a lot are boys though
Please excuse my atrociously dirty hands... got that whole veterinary-student-turned-plumbing-assistant-for-summer chic going on :lau
Haha, that’s totally understandable! My family is the same way, if I go on vacation for a few days I come back to find their bowls overflowing with treats and their food untouched. For now, I would assume that the other birds likely have the same condition and switch them over to another...
Based on the feed and history of treats, I think hepatic lipidosis could very well be the cause. Fatty liver disease occurs very commonly in quail with non-homogenized foods because they will pick their favorite morsels out of the feed (such as the seeds in the food you linked above). Dried...
How old was this hen, and how large was her cage? Would you happen to know the brand or the gamebird crumble? A sudden death without any sort of forewarning or wasting makes me lean a little more towards a head bonk or hepatic lipidosis, or both. Would it be possible to do a necropsy?
Anyone good with genetics wanna take a guess at how I got a full white chick from my aviary with no white birds? Would it be a spontaneous mutation, or could there be hidden white genes in one of the two potential fathers? For some reason I was thinking white was one gene and recessive, but I...
I started hatching quail at lower humidity (though not quite as low as Kiki) and it definitely boosted my hatch rates. I even got lucky and got a 100% hatch off shipped Myshire eggs. I’ve been averaging 30-40% humidity pre-lockdown, 55% during lockdown and letting it get to whatever it gets to...
This is probably TMI, but birds and reptiles lack the enzyme myeloperoxidase, which is produced by neutrophils in mammals in response to a bacterial infection and causes that loose, liquidy pus. So, when quail have abcesses they should be firm, almost like a mass instead of squishy. Sounds like...
How long has her eye been swollen like this? What’s her environment like? Is the discharge on her face from her nares or the swelling? Sorry if this was already covered in another thread, I couldn’t find that one.
