Any thoughts on how to transition into new younger birds. Our girls will be slowing down soon in the egg laying department, so besides making them stew chickens (the mrs. Does not like that option) what other option exists? I do not have room for more chickens in my coop unless I enclose more...
Thanks for the info....good idea. I figured the chickens would eat them, but the night activity makes sense. I was about ready to throw my two cats in the coop for the night ...but was not sure how that would go over....the rooster is pretty big!
Does anyone have a suggestion on knocking the mouse population down in our chicken coop? I can put traps out but don't want to hurt the chickens. I have a place behind a wall I could use dcon to kill the mice, but am worried the chickens may eat a poisoned mouse.
thanks
We have the same problem....we have 9 barred rocks and 7 of them have large bald patches on the back and behind....the other 2 are mostly feathered. This started over the winter because they did not have as much room to get out of the coupe and small covered run. Definitely a pecking order...
Our chickens appear to have started molting (bared plymouth rocks). They are about 8 months old and have been laying well since about early September but we are starting to see some off days on egg production and tonight we got home and see two hens with large bald spots on their backs...is...
Has anyone ever tried crossing these two breeds before? I have a dark brahma roo and barred rock hens....thought I might see what happens next spring if we try and incubate some eggs. Ideas on how to proceed?
Any ideas what might be going on with my Dark Brahma rooster? I noticed the leg feathers were getting thinner by the day and then his legs began looking red where the feathers used to be....I thought maybe it was scaly leg, so I spayed him for about a week. (He did not enjoy this!) But it did...
After more research...the whole leg looks raw and scaly...scaly leg caused by mites? I bought some spray and will treat tonight and every night this next week. The rooster is going to love being up close and personal with me this week.
I was going to ask a similar question. My dark brahma roo is loosing feathers on his feet and the legs look very raw....is this just molting. He is just over 6 months old.
HE is a roo....my dark brahma has been very docile so far...he started crowing yesterday and the night before he started biting the barred rock hens on the neck. He has been more aggressive with them than us.
Thanks for the info....funny this morning at 9:30 our rooster made his first crows....he let out about 6 deep crows...2 in front of my wife so she could visually confirm. Let the fun begin! We are interested to see if we allow some eggs to be hatched what a cross between the Dark Brahma and...
We ordered 10 barred plymouth rocks this April and also got a free dark brahma. They are just about 13 weeks old and have grown rapidly. We are not sure, but think the brahma is a cockerel. We posted a post in the gender area.
So far this breed has been wonderful to work with and are very...
