    My coop grand opening!

I’m finally done...well there is always something else to improve on but the bulk is complete. Ladies are 8 weeks old. Some of the ladies are crowing now but I’m not willing to give in and call them cockerls yet. It’s a little early still, right? We had some family over for a ribbon cutting...

    12-day old chick questions

New chick dad with a couple questions. I got 18 chicks last tuesday. they were hatched on monday 6/1. I've kept them in a spare bedroom in a 4'x3' dog cage with paper towels on the floor. I've been changing the paper towels three times a day for the first week and two times a day this week...

    Hardware cloth combo on run

I bought some fender washers and was going to use galvanized nails to get it taught. Then I had planned on screwing a finish board over all of the places to sandwich like you said. Roof will be metal but hardware cloth at eaves and windows.

    Hardware cloth combo on run

Here is what I’ve got so far. The run portion is 8’x6’x6’ tall. The horizontal board is at 2’ and the vertical members are 4’. I bought 1/4” hardware cloth (23gauge 48” roll). I was thinking of using this to cover all of the sides and then using a second layer of 16 gauge welded wire like...

    "Mini" coop-er build

Made some good progress on getting that coop close to being finished. Wife did lots of painting and I started on the run. Today was chick pickup day! We’ve just had them home about 4 hours. They have been peacefully sleeping the last two. I’ve got a web cam on them and had been fun to watch...

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking a couple weeks inside only since it’s my first time and they are bantams. I’m hoping to wrap up the coop this weekend it next and it will give me a little time to make sure it’s not drafty.

I know this is an old post, so I'm not sure if anyone will see this. I am looking at using this same type setup for 15 bantams hatching next week. I'm wondering how many weeks I can expect this space to work before I have to move them outside? the 4x6 coop will be finished in a couple of weeks...

    "Mini" coop-er build

We did consider building the coop as a Mini Cooper but i didn’t think I could pull it off and not make it look like a plywood-box-car. My wife thinks I should try making a small Mini Cooper- maybe 1-2’ long that the chickens can get in and we can pretend they are driving. 🤣

    "Mini" coop-er build

Hey, all you cool cats and chickens, I wanted to post the progress of my coop build. It's been tons harder than I imagined it would be, but I wanted to give hope and inspiration to anyone thinking they can't do it. I have very little experience with woodworking and while I've been close to tears...

    Hello from NW Arkansas!

    (1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Yes. I’ve wanted them for a while. We finally live outside city limits so I thought I’d give it a try. (2) How many chickens do you have right now? I ordered from Cackle and they should be hatching June 1. (3) What breeds do you...

    concrete post advice

I live in Arkansas. I'm not saying we have wind concerns all the time, but during tornado season they get pretty strong. They were predicting 80mph straight line winds this Tuesday, but the storm didn't do anything much where we are. sorry I don't understand your comment about the overhang. the...

    concrete post advice

So - if I was not worried about it blowing over in the wind, or concerned that it would last forever - I feel like I see lots of people putting the 4x4 posts directly on the ground. I understand that would cause eventually rot, and I've read putting the 4x4 posts directly on concrete could cause...

I think we are talking about the same area. in this photo it looks like the horizontal member attached to the post is off the ground. I wondered if you back filled this. I assumed grass will grow up around the hardware cloth like I've seen on other posts. I just wasn't sure if there was dirt...
