    Infertile eggs?

Ceinwyn Thank you so much! I will start with the dog food, and talk to the neighbor about the fishmeal and or brewers yeast. Going with those, do I use both the meal and the yeast?, or only one of the three you mentioned? With my big chickens, I think you're right--just low fertility, but...

    Infertile eggs?

Thank you galanie--I wondered about the temp--I have two thermometers, but they both give me different readings--one says it's 101 degrees and the other 99. So maybe the higher one is more accurate. Also, both hydrometers read differently, so maybe I should read the lower one and up the...

    Infertile eggs?

This is the second time I've tried to hatch eggs from my own chickens. I've had great success with other people's eggs, but not my own. With my first batch (Of my own chicken's eggs) I set about 35. Day 14 candling showed 25 clear eggs, and 10 that were beyond clear, but "iffy" as to whether...

What breed do you use for meaties and why?

I'm ordering a bunch for ourselves as well as three other households. When we all talked about it, it seemed they all want them NOW. If so, it won't be CornishX, cuz butchering time will be late July or early Aug--I'm with mama24--I'm thinking it'll be too warm for them. But probably not for...

Tell me a bit about your set up when you butcher, please.

Thank you all for sharing what works for you. I've read that a lot of people clean the birds innards out after they bring them inside-- I LIKE that! Air conditioning, here I come! LOL! I especially like the suggestion form you, infernoflower, about cutting through the ribs near the backbone...

What breed do you use for meaties and why?

Bucky, thanks so much for this info--I am going to order from one of them. I liked the MT-DI's site, they seemed pretty downhome and honest. I'm glad you posted this on my thread! I hope others also consider either of these places. I'll post how it goes after I order. Do these...

What breed do you use for meaties and why?

Okay, so if I get the CornishX, the earlies I should get them is late July, so they could be processed in late September, early Oct. I like the idea of a fast turnaround. I don't like the idea of stinky and unable to walk well, so may still go with a one of these others mentioned. We don't...

Tell me a bit about your set up when you butcher, please.

We did our first butcher (mostly extra roos) this past weekend and it took 6 people 4 hours to do 14 chickens. I doubt that's good! LOL! First of all, there were only two who knew how to process-- we got a guy and his dad to come out and help us, and teach us-- in return, he got 1/3 of the...

What breed do you use for meaties and why?

So am I going to have to go through a hatchery to get my Cornish-whatever, or do you think someone with a local farm would have 50-75 birds? I still don't know what the diff is between Cornish Rock and Cornish X. 'Nother question. From what I've been reading, this would be a bad time of...

My last post on this topic, I swear.

My suggestion, go find a friend who is processing their birds, watch and help. It's easier with someone else's birds the first time. We just processed our first chickens yesterday--14 extras-- mostly roos. Two were named roos, my son and I wanted to keep, but they were mutts and we got...

What breed do you use for meaties and why?

What's the difference between Cornish Rock and Cornish X? Do Freedom Rangers process at about 5 lbs? (Around 8-12 weeks?) I do like the idea of breeding our own, but I have read the the Cornish Rocks are really easy to process-- easier than most chickens. We just processed 14 "extras" this...

What breed do you use for meaties and why?

We're looking into getting some meat birds, and all I've ever hear was the name Cornish Rock--until here! So what's the best in your opinion and why? Also, I'm wondering if there's a local place in NW GA to pick up some meat chicks. TIA

do bantams hatch before regular sized chickens?

I ususally set both Bantam and regular sized eggs in each of my hatchings. The bantams always hatch first--usually the day after lockdown. This time I have only bantam eggs, so i am making lockdown day a day earlier.

Nail clipping? Hope I'm in the right place. . .

I have a bantam Silver Duckwing hen that, tonight when I was looking at her, realized she was standing funny--like she's bow-legged! In case i was missing something I looked at her sister, she was standing normally-- legs upright beneath her. We picked the bow-legged girl up, and low and...

    Injured leg on bantam roo

We have two new patients in the house now. One is a pullet that got in with the big birds and she's got peck holes in her back. We know what to do there-- keep the wounds clean and use antibiotic cream/lotion/spray. The second is a Brassy back Bantam OEG . We think it's broken it's leg or...
