Ok, so I'm not asking whether or not we can eat the dead ones. However, they seem to start showing signs of 'slowing down' a couple days before they die - usually about 3 days before. Is it ok, when we see them starting to slow down, to process them then? I'm guessing that they're succumbing...
Ok folks - if we can steer back to the main course a bit.
Question: I already have one chick hatched and several peeps. Is it too dangerous to do a REALLY QUICK job at attaching a cage (hardware cloth) to the fan? I would have the fan pre-designed and fit, and then just open 'er up for, say...
AARRRGGHHHHHH...
So, after ALL this effort, my wife calls to let me know that some guys from BC Hydro stopped by to let her know they were going to shut down the power! Its only for 15 minutes, but we don't know when. It was scheduled for 30 minutes ago, and it hasn't happened yet.
So - what...
I CAN unplug it - but I wasn't sure if it was a good idea to stop the air circulation at this point? If it's ok to do that, then I can just unplug it, yep.

Ok, so I'm not going to freak out like others do at this point (yeah right...), but I do have a couple questions.
WHen they chicks pip, is there continual movement/pipping action? Or do the chicks take long breaks? I just got up after sleeping through my 3:00 alarm to go check the eggs, and...
but mine is kind of hanging precariously (I was only able to screw one side of the fan into the top of the incubator - I know, I'm an idiot... although it seems to have worked!), and it hangs quite low - like, definitely just a half inch or so above the top of the eggs. That scares me, but I...
So I should have a number of chicks hatching in a couple days - Wednesday is their ETA. And as luck would have it, I have a hen who's starting to go broody. She's had a couple starts this winter, but this one looks genuine.
So my question's are:
1) is it a viable option to have the hen...
So, I rigged up a fan in my hovabator this last hatching attempt (my second) and things are going swimmingly. 27 of 40 eggs made it to lockdown (yesterday), and of those about 5 or 6 were infertile - so just a couple blood rings and a couple quitters. Not bad, seeing my first hatch was a...
It's tough. It's not just about exercise, but about your percentage of body fat. Ie, everyone HAS intercostal muscles - it's just hard to see them. So by a combination of strengthening/defining your abdominals, and lowering your overall body fat percentage, you'll actually be able to SEE your...
I've got about 30 eggs waiting to hatch. Assuming they all do (best case scenario, of course), how big of a space do I need for the first few days?
I was going to use a 22 gallon aquarium, but I gather it won't be big enough, and I should probably have a larger space for the chicks to move...
