I would love to try these birds if for no other reason than their temperament, but how do you deal with those feathered feet? We are in the middle of a torrential downpour right now and due to the slope in our yard the runs get wet no matter what we do. I can’t imagine those beautiful leg...
Good morning to you. You have LOTS of options with a building that large. When I do my next coop I will likely install droppings boards under my perches and put “catwalks” around the inside of the coop for the girls to wander around on. If your chicken math hasn’t gotten out of hand yet (lol)...
The general rule of thumb is to start your brooder temp at 95 degrees and slow back it down by 5 degrees per week if memory serves. You can actually watch the chick’s behavior for clues as to whether it’s too hot or cold by watching if they huddle together under the heater (means it’s too cold...
Greetings and welcome to the BYC family. As I recommend to all newcomers please look up The Chicken Chick’s website also. Very informative and a lot of her information is backed by science and recommendations from poultry vet experts. Plus her chicken coops and yard is downright gorgeous :-)...
Believe it or not obesity in backyard chickens is becoming a real issue. My poultry vet said to limit treats like scratch to 2Tbp per every bag of feed. That’s not much when you think about it. Maybe try these treats instead - they are more nutritionally balanced than scratch and other chicken...
Good morning ya’ll. Seems I forgot to formally introduce myself. I’ve been a fan of BYC for a couple of years now when I started researching all things chickens. Got the itch to create a little farmstead and hubby had NO interest in sheep or alpacas so chickens became the natural choice. Once...
I’m thinking Tyson and Dakota are boys - interestingly, I have 2 Black Copper Marans but I got them as pullets. Wish I had seen them when they were babes - yours are SO cute!!! Good luck no matter how it turns out.
I went crazy and had a contractor build a huge run off of my 6x10 Amish built coop/run combo. Honestly the birds love it but it has been a challenge to decorate. 20ft of the run is covered in metal roofing so that’s where their food/water/dust bath is. Since the rest is uncovered I have added a...
The Dutch doors my contractor built for me. They allow me to swing open the top portion to grab the feeder and water pail while keeping the girls inside. It’s also like a picture window - I have a clear view of feathered festivities with just the top half of the door open.
