    overheated chick

Have a 5 week old olive egger chick that looks like it got overheated (very quiet, won't eat or drink), all the other chicks of the same age are fine. Have her in a cool room, trying to get her to drink. Any suggestions? OK to spray with water?

    Chick death

Thank you to you both. Yes I called the store that I got them from and he thought shipping stress that this one chick just couldn't handle. I will give them a little sugar water. I have karo syrup as well as sugar - any suggestions for how to make it up?

    Chick death

Hi, I had my first chick death today. I have raised 16 chicks over the past 6 years and have never lost one. They shipped in from Iowa on Friday when I picked them up from my usual local source. All 4 were eating and drinking well and being very active. They have a continual clean water...

    Dirty butt

One more question, I picked up the chick grit and on the bag it states to wait until 2 weeks of age. They are 6 days old, should I wait or start it right away?

    Dirty butt

Thank you for your quick reply. Yes the Scratch and Peck Starter. The temperature is good, they seem very comfortable. I don't have scratch for them but I can certainly get some if you think it will help. I'll try the coconut oil. So appreciate your time and input.

    Dirty butt

Hi, I have 2 new chicks (barred plymouth rock) in my brooder. I purchased them on friday so they are now about 6 days old. They are both doing well, eating, drinking and active. However one of them collect feces on their hindend, very dry that gets stuck. I used a moist warm cloth to soak...

    Broody Chicken

So let Maude out tonight, she hooked up with Mabel right away (her paired Wyandotte), they ate together, tootled around looking for bugs then both went up in the roosting area (Yeah!). So it took her 4 days of isolation. Apparently the larger cage was OK. Thank you to you both for your...

    Broody Chicken

OK Great, thank you - will give that program a try. Would rather not go the fertile egg route - not really set up to deal with chicks. Will let you know how it goes.

    Broody Chicken

I do have a kennel inside the large cage that does have bedding so I'm guessing I need to remove the bedding?

    Broody Chicken

Oh, OK - interesting. She insisted on laying in the most popular nest box and the other chickens had to go elsewhere which stressed them out. I have 2 other nest boxes available but the girls are in the habit of only using the one.

    Hello from Arizona

I have actually been a BYC member for several years but have never introduced myself. I live in southeastern Arizona with my husband Dave and currently have 7 chickens, kept for both eggs and the endless entertainment and companionship that they supply! They include a retired RIR, Australorps...

    Broody Chicken

I have a 1 year old Wyandotte that has gone broody. I have her separated from the rest of the flock. She is in a wired cage that is 6 foot high and 10 x 20 feet, with food, water and lots of snacks. Is that too large of an area for containment? My other option is a large dog kennel. Also...
