A little different way of adding chicks

Very cool. As with most livestock, the natural ways that work with the needs and instincts of the animals, rather than for the convenience of us humans, are usually most healthy for the livestock, physically and mentally. You know your animals.👍 Very educational. Thank you!

    I'm Exhausted! 😩

I saw a post by someone that bought hot peppers at the produce store and dryed/powdered them and used them to deter any pests around the garden or chicken coop. Ghost Peppers were mentioned. I guess it CAN work. To stop me from sucking my thumb, I remember my dad painting my thumb with some...

    I'm Exhausted! 😩

Hehe. One has to be stubborn to be a good farmer, so maybe farming is in your genes. Don't you hate working with wire? Whether hardware cloth, rabbit wire, chicken wire... I always end up scratched and bleeding with no fingerprints left on my fingers. Good thing you are stubborn! My...

    I'm Exhausted! 😩

Oh, ouch.😣 Do you wear gloves? I still get blisters with gloves, but usually not as bad. I have a planting hoe that can get down pretty deeply, but I still have to comb through and pull out the Bermuda roots and break up the dirt clumps. I hate gardening as I feel inadequate and tend to kill...

    Wildlife netting, but not roofed

The old Fortex buckets were thick and seemed to have string imbedded in the rubber. I hammered solid ice out of many and never made a hole in an old one. Felt bad that I ruined it. The new rubber pans don't seem as sturdy as the old ones.

Wise chickens. I hope my chickens have wise genes, too.

    I'm Exhausted! 😩

Exactly. Happens more often, lately, it seems.Breaking new ground for garden, and no rototiller. The old-fashioned way. Wish the chickies could do it.

    Wildlife netting, but not roofed

Yes, have heard that adage, but didn't think of it when I asked the question. All year, even in winter, I watch wild birds enjoy the bird baths. I have raised many wild birds and they love taking baths in pie plates set in the kitchen sink under a dripping faucet. I wonder why chickens don't...

    Wildlife netting, but not roofed

Cool! Good idea. Will have to find room in my upright freezer, though.🤔

Oh, and I do have shade for them. Cedars to the west and an old elm over the pen. Great for shade. 👍 Horrible for dropping twigs on the netting every time the wind blows which is most days.☹️

    Wildlife netting, but not roofed

I'm in the center of the USA, and our summers can be very hot and dry. I wondered about ice! It gets so hot, I have to change out the bird bath water a couple of times during the day. The 100 gallon horse troughs get as warm as bath water! 😳

    Wildlife netting, but not roofed

I was cussing to beat the band while putting up both kinds, but the fabric was easier to handle. Good thing I don't have close neighbors, although, depending on which way and how strongly the wind is blowing, any neighbors within a 2-mile radius might be rattled. It gets very hot here in the...

    Wildlife netting, but not roofed

Thank you. I was hoping they would go into the coop by themselves. Do chickens ever take water baths like wild birds do? I know they take dust baths, but I wondered what they'd do in hot weather if I put a large, shallow container of a water in the pen?

Massive incoming grain and food shortages

With my pelleted horse feed, the pellets seem clumped/packed inside the bag. Sometimes you can't tell till you open it and see/smell mold. Often, the tag on the bag will clue you in to the expiration date. All grain past the expiration date is not bad, but the chances of it being bad are...
