Thanks for the input from you both. I figured it would be OK ,but just wanted to check as I have heard of some fruits/plants being poisonous at certain stages in the growth process. My hogs are in the 200-250 lb range so not full grown, but not babies anymore either.
I've got a huge pear tree that had the top 2/3 of the tree broken off in a major storm the other day, and the broken part literally has over 300 golfball-sized pears on it. I'm hoping to not waste all of these under ripe pears and was hoping it would be safe to feed these in moderation to my...
Coturnix are definately raised very easy at minimal cost. They reach mature size by 6-8 weeks and only take 17 days to hatch. So while they are smaller, it doesn't take nearly as long to raise them for meat. Chukars and bobwhites are other alternatives which are larger birds, but they take 16...
Here's a little video I put together of the slaughtering and processing of a quail, which will also be the same process for most other birds, and I thought I'd share it.

How old are your quails? You can sex browns very easy visually. Females lack mottling on their chest, and on the converse, males have mottling on their chest.
In regards to no signs of aggression, dont take that as everything will be ok forever. Things may be fine for a week, maybe a month...
Which variety do you have?
They're wont really be to many warning signs. If you find one that's beat up, chances are that's a male. Find the other one with blood on his face/beak/chest, and that's another male.
Thanks for the reply Ntsees.
I did the complete opposite of you. From 8 hens, I've got 6 eggs, all of which were fertile. I'm hoping they'll start back up but it's looking like the extreme weather swing screwed me up for 2013.
This year has been horrible for me so far with the weather, and has messed my birds laying routines all up. One week is 60s with lows in the 40s, and the following week 90s with lows in the 70s. My mountain quails have been breeding since April and layed a couple random eggs at the end of April...
I second twocrows, you've probably got too many males. Coffee cans work as great hiding places for them too. Which variety do you have? I see this happen a lot with breeders of Texas A&M and have heard several complaints about one local breeder who tends to give all males when you want all...
I ended up doing it anyways a couple days ago, and my mountain quail picked up how to use them almost immediately; I'd say they were good to go within 5 min.
As for the chicks, I have no desire for them to be on an automatic waterer. They have been and will continue to drink from the small...
Just curious if any of you have used these automatic chicken waterers with quail before and whether you had any luck with them using it? I'm trying to decide on a new automatic watering system to switch over to and picked up a few of these for cheap.
