I've determined how I plan on handling the predator situation. Build a trap big enough for a fox. Not going to bait constantly, only when a known problem exists. I have a motion detector / alarm set up as part of my setup now, but I've got game camera pics of the fox at 4AM. There's no way...
I've had to deal with a fox in the spring. It had killed all 4 of our chickens at the time. It was a very brazen fox. My wife spotted it a few feet from our house, I got the 22, opened the window while watching it mosey down to the garden where I had placed one of the dead chickens. I got 1...
I don't know if a possum would go after a live chicken. But they do go after chicken [pieces] left as bait. I've been trying to get the fox that took 2 hens & a rooster. Now that the possums are no longer stealing the bait, I have a better chance at getting the fox.
Thank you for the suggestions! Sadly, she died around 1AM.
The remaining 2 seem well, even jumping around more.
They have the chick starter stuff we got with them from the hatchery. They have about 1-1/2 x 2-1/2 foot area to live in. One area has a heated floor, and a lamp - both on...
We got 3 chicks Monday. [6 days ago] The first few days, one was smaller then the other 2, and I thought she wasn't doing well. The last day or 2, I noticed she has grown a lot, caught up to the larger of the 2 healthier ones. While at the same time, one of the previously healthy ones began...
our first rooster - Weber - was aggressive. He spurred my leg. In case you haven't had the experience, it HURTS! Felt like someone whacked my leg with a stick. Drew blood. I [and anyone else] had to watch him every second I was in the yard. Oh, he'd leave me alone for a day or 2 after he...
Interesting.
My rooster jumped at me & spurred my leg. I didn't have a stick or anything at the moment. I chased him around a bit, making loud noises and lunging at him. He's been more cautious around me so far. I'd do the pick up & hold thing, but I'd have to catch him...
Would it be...
Sounds like fly strike. Found other threads discussing that.
It doesn't matter now, she died. The stinky smell in the coop was only her. No smell in there now. She had it on the way home, I thought it was just the poop in the cage. The smell was kind of like a dead animal, so I'll know if...
The smell I had noticed when we got the 3 hens & rooster. But I thought it was just some poo or something. But today, I noticed the one hen staying apart from the others, and she had some small fly like bugs sitting on her. She has kind of mangy feathers on her tail.
I also saw her...
Glad to see they will mow the run. I was worrying about how I'd deal with weeds & stuff growing in the run. I plan on having a good sized one, for when we know there are predators about, but still want to free range mostly.
They had the run yesterday and today, I let them come out for a while right before dusk this evening, so they explored for about 45 minutes, and went to the coop.
Yes, they have a small fenced run. It will be expanded, as time permits, free range when we can keep an eye on them. Coop is in a shady location, so not too hot. They have layer feed, water, oyster shells available at all times.
