I realize this is am old thread, but did you ever figure out why she was laying rubber eggs at night? I have a hen who is doing the same, but im not sure which one it is. It could be a 2 year old buff or our 6 year old buff.
Update: I hadn't realized it's been a month since felicia has been living in our garage. She remains unchanged really. One thing that IS different is that she laid an egg yesterday!!! We were shocked! We've been thinking she's an internal layer, so can internal layers still lay occasionally? She...
It's now the 15th, and Felicia is still the same. We still have her in a cage in the garage, but I've been taking her outside daily so the other hens can see her. She can stand for a couple of minutes, but can't walk very well at all. sometimes, in the cage, she will be eating and just collapse...
Thank you for your reply. I have seen the slings here and there. It's definitely something I need to look into more. I guess when they poop, it just stays next to their body, the same as if she was laying down. Right now, she just wants me to hold her all the time. lol Obviously, I can't do...
My 3-1/2 year old Buff Orpington has slowly gotten to the point she is mostly unable to stand or walk. She is not eggbound, hasn't been dropping any rubber eggs (we had another hen who was an internal layer who started by laying "rubber" eggs), has never started laying again after her last...

I realize this post is very old, but I'm wondering how your hen did through treatment. We have a hen who has terrible fleet and a small prolapse. Thanks for all the great info!
Never heard of giving oxytocin to a non lactating animal that does not give birth to live offspring. Oxytocin has 2 main actions. Causes contractions of the uterus to assist in birth and the let down response in lactation.
We ended up taking our hen to a vet yesterday. He took x-rays (yes...
Did your hen get back to normal and able to walk again? We just had our hen to vet, who said she has at least 3 eggs inside. He gave her oxytocin also. I'm hopeful she'll be walking soon, if the eggs expel, but didnt know there may be permanent nerve damage??
Our sweet hen, Henrietta, had a bald spot on her head that we were afraid would eventually be bloodied, so we dabbed it with Blu kote in hopes it would discourage pecking. Since then, the bullying has intensified and spread to the other hens bullying her. We've crated the top hen in the pen run...
I realize this is an old post, but it helped confirm my suspicions. My BO rooster is usually pretty gentle (sometimes he'll allow me to pet him, but my husband picks him up). The last few days he's showed signs of aggression towards me. The first time it happened, I was wearing a new shirt that...
I've been using pine shavings for the coop floor, but have just learned about this amazing product! I've read quite a few of these informative comments, but am wondering how much of it to use if I still use the shavings? Should I spread a thin amount underneath the shavings and then a thin...
Hi all,
I've been coming to Backyard Chickens for awhile to get information about our first flock of chickens. I finally decided to register so I an actually interact with all you wonderfully informative chicken people!
We have five Buff Orpington chickens - one rooster and four hens. They...
No, he's not scratching at all. His chest is on the ground, with his hind end up. He starts whining and screaching. It's really quite hilarious. My husband and I get a good laugh every time he does it. Actually, I believe he's done it when there have been other changes in the run, also, but...
We have 4 Buff Orpington hens and 1 BO rooster. While Stubs, the rooster, is extremely friendly (with me anyway), he has a fit whenever I clean out the coop. He watches me closely as I'm cleaning it out. Then, when I'm finished, he will go into the coop and lay his chest to the floor, raise up...
