Hi, my chickens have been laying for just about 6 weeks. My Easter Egger started to go broody and tried to sit on the empty nest for two days. I successfully broke her out of it, but she still hasn't layed again and it's been a week. How long until she resumes laying again?
I keep water in the coop and feed and water in the run. I open the pop door first thing and they jump out and get breakfast. When the weather warms up I'll probably leave the pop door open all night so they can let themselves out. (My whole coop and run is wrapped in hardware cloth - it's the...
Once I had all the materials bought, I'd say it took three full days (6-7 hour days). One day to cut and seal/stain everything; one day to build the frame; one day to finish the hardware cloth wrapping and build the roof.
It looks great, congratulations! I'm also a single mum and built the Garden Ark myself - he writes excellent plans. You should be so proud of your work!
So last night when I locked up I tried placing the girls on the roost - they wouldn't have any of it and scampered back to their preferred corner. Then I got to watch the most amusing display of unders and overs I've ever seen. Each one would try and push underneath another so they had the...
Anyone maybe in the market for an RIR roo? I won't call it until I see an egg/hear a crow, but the pics are looking suspicious (just posted in the Guessing Game category).
Ah, bugger. I figured you'd all say that. I just hoped Omelet was an early puberty girl. S/he has developed the irridescent feathering in tail and hackles (that's the back of the neck, right?) in the last week also, which was adding to my worries.
If the legs are suspect, then my other two...
I'll try tonight - thanks. Between the comb size and color on the RIR, the early color on the SLW comb, and the scary saddle feathers on my EE, I'm paranoid that I picked three boys out of a hundred sexed pullets! If I beat those odds I'd have to get into the lotto.
Thanks! They're eight weeks old. I think the coop roost is a little smaller than the other one. I'm in OR and it is still in the 40s at night, so maybe it's just the snuggle factor. As long as they're not making a mite factory sleeping like that I'll leave it alone.
Mine appear to prefer to sleep snuggled together in a corner of the coop on the shavings rather than perch on the roost. I used a branch for the roost and they happily use the outer roost (also a branch) during the day. Does it matter where they sleep (bugs, etc?). Should I be trying to move...
I have three 8 week old chickens bought as sexed pullets - one RIR, one SLW, and one EE. Of the three, both RIR and SLW have red/pink comb colorings and have had for a while. Neither show any saddle feather development. However, I just looked at Pet Duck Boy's RIR photos, and my RIR has a very...
