Eggclucktic Acres Chicken Castle
Almost every chicken coop begins with a story. Ours started when we went over to an old friend's house in the summer of 2009. The sounds of hens filled the air and my wife rushed to the friend's coop with glee. "We can do this!" she said. We sampled a dozen eggs...
Hi there!
It was nice meeting some of you at the Monroe show last weekend. Someone there suggested that I post about my 3 Silkie/Barnevelder chicks that need a home. They are coming up on 4 weeks old and are with a Broody. I would really like to get the Broody back in the pen and the chicks...
I thought we entered the last coop design contest but I don't see our coop in the coop index.
Here it is...

This is my first incubator hatch and I seem to have three chicks with beaks out of their shells but no movement. I am a little worried since I have had three chicks pass away already. My humidity level is at 80% is that too high? Why do you think I'm losing chicks?
Also, I have one chick...
I just moved my December broody and her 8 chicks outside (it is 50 degrees) to their own pen. They have been in my master bathroom since a week before hatch. Now two more have gone broody and I am going to let them.
Well today is the "official" hatch due date. Today is 21 days since I moved the eggs into the nest box. Out of 10 eggs, 8 have hatched so far :2 on Tuesday, 2 on Wednesday, 2 on Friday and 2 today so far but we've also had one casualty, a black Silkie that was born on Wednesday passed away...
My Silkie didn't growl or peck at me. Granted she is my friendliest chicken and is more like a pet than any of the others.
For me, I went into the coop and noticed she was huddled in the corner on the floor of the coop. I went over to check on her and realized that she was sitting on 10...

Yesterday 7:13 pmGreat job, your girls are going to be spoiled. One thing we learned on our first coop, the people in the know said that chickens need a 2x4, wide side for them to stand on to keep their feet warm and comfortable. They aren't like birds that clutch a branch or something...
Before you consider any type of weapon make sure you know and understand your applicable laws and ordinances for destroying predators. Where we live we have to be able to justify that the predator was a threat to us or our property/livestock. An earlier poster mentioned the 30.06 as his weapon...
We want to share our coop because the BYC coop pages gave us ideas and inspiration during our planning process.
Here is the link to our coop page:

We just finished our coop page and are excited to share it with others. I read that we need to wait until the next "coop contest" in order to have it considered to be shared. Is that true and if so o when is the next opportunity to share our lessons learned?
My genesis arrived on Christmas Eve and I need to get it set up. I'm saving up my fertilized Barnevelder eggs to try for my first incubated hatch. Does anyone know how full the incubator needs to be before it is run?
In my meantime my Silkie is sitting on 10 eggs that I expect to hatch out...
Let me know how it goes. How did you know they were fertile? That idea sounds like a neat idea for my daughter's science fair project.
My Broody hen is sitting on eggs that are set to hatch on Jan 1 as well. It is my first hatch and a total experiment. I think I'm going to get...
