The coating on the eggs, bloom, is a natural bacteria shield. Grandma never washed them and kept them on the counter as long as I can remember.
It will wash off with water and it is best to refrigerate if you need to "clean " the eggs.

You will need to go deep, about a foot or more. Chickens take"dirt baths" and mine dig 6-8" holes
Dirt is fine if you have a cover or good drainage. You don't want a mud pond.
If you are going to "tractor" meat birds and set it up to monitor / visit every few days, it may work out for you. Anything else woud have too many chances for things to go wrong.
Gallons do not matter. The nipples offered today either all stainless or the red plastic ones have one limitation in common. They will leak thru with water pressure over 16" of water collumn. (about 0.75 psi) This means that the top of the water supply can not be more than 16" above the nipple...
If you look behind and below the eye you will see a red patch on the RIR and wyandott and a then a white patch on the Leghorn. That is the color of egg that bird will lay. Actually the red patch indicated a brown egger,
The coop is lighted with LEDs and the 26 girls free roam a 1600 sqft fenced field. They are just 5 months and we are getting 5 eggs per day. In the summer they were in at dusk but now they stay out till fairly dark.
