Our first broody...shipped eggs started on 8/10. Come & hatch along!

Hubby did the chicken chores this morning. We have a little bitty blue (or black) banty baby! I'll get a closer look when I get home and do the afternoon check. Hopefully I'll have pics too.

Our first broody...shipped eggs started on 8/10. Come & hatch along!

I had one hatch yesterday, but it didnt make it through the night. Another was half hatched, but died before getting all the way out (it was upside down in the egg, so maybe it drowned). Those were both half leghorn chicks. Out of the remaining 3 banty and 2 large, I thought I heard at least one...

    Roach Control!!!!!!!!

Sevin or DE... not sure how effective they will be on something as big as roaches, but I know they are safe around chickens.

Poor things! Advice for debeaked pullets I got today

I have some ex-battery Leghorn hens that were not only horribly de-beaked, but dubbed as well. When I first saw them, I was in tears. Even my hubby felt sorry for them. They aren't friendly, but they at least act like normal chickens now. I have noticed that they seem to prefer pellets to...

    Banties and broodies

Old English Game Bantams can be good broodies too. I have one right now sitting on a nest and she is only 6 months old. I think she only laid for 2-3 weeks before going broody.

Our first broody...shipped eggs started on 8/10. Come & hatch along!

One of my banties went broody last week. The 7th was day 1, so mine are due close to yours. What kinds of chicks are you hatching? I have 3 blue OEGB, 3 mixed banty, and 3 white leghorn/OEGB mixes. The daddy is a Blue OEGB. Mothers are blue/ splash OEGBs, white leghorns, and possibility of red...

    moving a broody?

I have a young first time OEGB pullet that is broody (she's only 6 months old). Today is Day 10 that she has been sitting on the nest, hogging everyone's favorite box. Hubby and I left marked eggs under her and have been removing any new ones daily. We will be candling tonight if it isnt...

Only the folks here would find this as amusing as I...

You walk back in, muddy and naked... and your DH has to ask "What's wrong?"!?!?! Too funny! If I was the one stomping back in like that, I don't think my DH would have been able to get any words past his hysterical laughter.

    poofless silkie gender

LOL Sonoran! That is sooooo true about the names. I will try to check IT's pubic bones this afternoon. I had 2 other Silkies with this batch, oth obviously boys. One was killed the other night in a raccoon attack (the reason for the change in pens for IT) and the other boy has a really funky...

    poofless silkie gender

I am really hoping IT is a girl. But 3 months ago, I would have sworn all 3 Silkies I got were boys. Then 2 months ago, I started maybe, possibly seeing less boy traits with this one. Last month, I gave up and just decided to go with the hopelessly clueless belief that I won't know until it...

    poofless silkie gender

Here are some pics of IT. IT really seems quite content in the house. Other than being uglier than it used to be, it's not acting upset at all anymore. It won't be going back in that pen though, even if Blue Roo did take a liking to it. When it heals up enough, it will be going into the new...

    poofless silkie gender

I have a 21 week old buff silkie that had all its poof feathers pulled out when I tried to introduce it to a new pen of banties. Before the de-poofing, sometimes I would think I saw streamers, then other times I would think I just imagined it. There has been no crowing, no egg, and the comb and...

    Introducing an oddball drama

I have a buff silkie that I have no clue whether it is a boy or a girl. Some days I would swear I saw "streamers" and other days I would think I imagined them. It is now 21 weeks old, and no tell tale egg or crow to give me a hint. I had it in my "for sale" pen until I could figure it out...

    Is this an OEG?

OEGB have single combs. I don't know what she is, but I know she isn't an OEG. Maybe an EE'er. Does she lay yet? If you get a blue or green egg, you'll know for sure!

bantam cochins - i think i got messed with :( (pics, need help!)

I think Mango is a boy, but they could be 10-12 weeks old. I have a few cochin frizzles that feathered out WAY slower than their flockmates and are about half the size of the others. They are 20 weeks old not and still much smaller than the others. They could easily be mistaken for 12 weeks...
